Sur l'établi, on peut voir différents objets de culte (calice, crosse), mais aussi des outils d'orfèvre. A l'arrière plan, un moine réalisant une soudure. Au premier plan : tabouret et enclume posé sur billot. D'une famille protestante originaire de l'Ardèche, Jean Chièze entre à l'école des Beaux-Arts de Lyon en 1916. Après avoir travaillé dans la décoration de tissus, il s'oriente vers l'enseignement, carrière qu'il poursuit durant 40 ans, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1963. Il a illustré 130 ouvrages et a collaboré à une centaine de publications. Les gravures sur bois y représentent environ 2000 estampes, les lithographies une vingtaine, les dessins et les cartons grattés environ 1400 images. De plus Jean Chièze a gravé sur bois 250 pièces isolées importantes et sur pierre quelques lithographies. Avec la Provence, la Corse, les Alpes, la Bretagne est une région pour laquelle l'artiste s'est découvert une véritable passion. Il fut subjugué lors de ses nombreux séjours (Ouessant, Sein, Molène, Audierne, Brest .) par la vie singulière des hommes en lutte contre les forces brutes de la nature. Attiré par Brest, Audierne et le Cap-Sizun, les îles de Sein et de Molène, il fit surtout, jusqu'en 1964, de nombreux séjours à Ouessant. Il en consigna les traditions et les moeurs dans le manuscrit des "Notes et documents graphiques sur Ouessant" (1958), et en transcrivit des aspects dans l'estampe ("Procession à Saint-Gildas d'Ouessant", 1954 ; "Proëlla à Ouessant", 1957 ; Dans le " bout ", 1961, etc.). Signé par l'auteur.
