Climate is a major factor affecting the profitability of rural enterprises in this state. Better knowledge of weather and climate could assist the farmers in the state in making more effective use of resources such as labour capital water etc. However like thousands of farmers across the globe the farmers in this state are also finding it hard to come to terms with the deteriorating conditions in agricultural sector marked by rising cost of cultivation and depleting ground water resources. So for scores of debt ridden small and marginal farmers there appears to be no respite from the techniques that are already available. The sufferings are unending. They are caught in the vicious circle of mounting debts and failed crops due to weather related disasters. These disasters include drought untimely rains hot and desicating winds hail storms etc. Therefore the income to the farmers in reducing substantially due to these weather abnormalities/aberrations. Therefore there is an urgent need to take up farmer friendly initiatives through better access to weather knowledge that will serve as a non monetary input. In addition the knowledge of the farmers should be strengthened to cope with environment disasters that irreversibly affect their resource base and farming systems. Government of India proposed many projects/schemes to improve the socio economic conditions of farmers in India and wanted to transfer technologies from the research stations to farmers fields. The programme like national demonstration Operational Research Project Lab to Land watershed management etc and Krishi Vigyan Kendra was initiated during the year 1974 at Madur Karaikal Pondicherry under the host organization of Government of Pondicherry and subsequently placed under the administrative control of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Based on the activities of this KVK Planning Commission approved the proposal of the ICAR to establish 18 KVKs during the Fifth Five Year Plan. The strength of the KVKs reached to 541 as on today and it may be about 585 because each district in the country will have one KVK irrespective of the size and area of the district. The main functions of the KVKs are to conduct training programmes on farm trials front line demonstrations extension education livelihood programmes etc. The jurisdiction of the KVK is only within the district. This is hoped to cater the needs of farmers farm women rural youth artisans etc. in rural areas. There is no proper documentation till now. Hence this book is proposed to cover all aspects for the benefit of the scientists extension workers administrators planners etc. The KVKs are managed by State Agricultural Universities ICAR Institutions Non Governmental Organizations etc. These are wholly funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research so as to improve the knowledge of the farmers and other rural people in technologies of agriculture and allied enterprises for improving productivities and profitabilities of farming activities so as to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the rural people. 192 pp.

The current socio-economic situation of India presents complex problems of environmental pollution and decline of farm income coupled with rural poverty. There are no simple solutions to the above issues; but a careful analysis of the available options does suggest some silver-linings a midst the rapidly darkening horizons. One such ameliorating options would be gradual restoration of soil fertility and enhancement of agri-ecosystems by including productive tree plantations in rural scenario. Pongamia pinnata, popularly known in India as Karanj has been found to be one of the most sustainable trees with regard to its soil enhancement and carbon sequestration properties apart from its stability in seed and oil yield. Pongamia pinnata is also credited with several preventive and curative properties as established by Ayurvedic medicine. It may be recalled that in the decades of nineteen seventies a few villages reaped sustainable incomes in the face of acute and chronic droughts that plagued the nation, solely due to the availability of some old Pongamia / karanj tree stands around those zones. Kranj oil has exhibited promise as a source of green energy. Nevertheless, the research on improvement of Karanj and its management as a productive plantation is nebulous.
