He argues that film-makers working at the Alexander Dovzhenko Feature Film Studio in Kiev were obsessed with questions of identity and demanded that the Soviet film industry and audiences alike recognize Ukrainian cultural difference. The first two chapters provide the background on how Soviet cinema since Stalin cultivated an exoticised and domesticated image of Ukrainians, along with how the film studio in Kiev attempted to rebuild its reputation during the early Sixties as a centre of the cultural thaw in the USSR. In 1910 Frank Debenham was one of a group of three geologists on Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctic Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). From January to March 1911, along with three other expedition members (Thomas Griffith Taylor, Charles Wright (physicist) and Edgar Evans), he explored and mapped the western mountains of Victoria Land, performing scientific studies and geological observations. He did not take part in the ill-fated journey to the South Pole due to a knee injury sustained while playing football in the snow, and instead took part in the second western journey along with Griffith Taylor, Tryggve Gran and William Forde. On his return from the expedition in 1913, he entered Cambridge University to write up his field notes. Contains 264 pp with monochrome photographs and text figures throughout. Zimmer remained close to President Obama after he left Chicago, being nominated in 2011 to serve on the National Science Board of the National Science Foundation. After the Obama presidency, Zimmer was instrumental in the successful effort to bring the Obama Presidential Center to the South side of Chicago. After his untimely death in 2023, Obama noted in a short obituary that Zimmer was ".a visionary leader and one of the most influential university presidents in the country.".

My wife went to Beauchamp Place long ago to call on Mr. Bryan but found that you had left & could not learn your address.' He accepts with pleasure the invitation to lunch with him and Colonel Durand, 'whose book I read with much interest'. (The book was 'The Making of a Frontier' by Colonel Algernon George Arnold Durand (1854-1923), who distinguished himself in the 1891 Hunza-Nagar Campaign.) He will also be glad 'a little latter [sic]' to 'repeat if you wish it the experiment of a talk to a room full of men'. He thinks the subject should be 'National Education, military & general', or 'On Educating the nation for war & other things.' He suggests they have 'a talk about that later on perhaps'.

Begins by discussing two books recommended by Bower: Otto Hammann's 'World Policy of Germany' and a work by Sir Francis Younghusband. Hammann's book 'confirms what Sir Sidney Lee writes about the Kaiser's telegram'; he is pleased that Younghusband's, which he has not yet read, contradicts the story that 'Lord Ripon was prepared for such drastic measures'. He has been 'correcting the proofs of the 600-page history of South Africa which I undertook to write for Longmans Green five or six years ago'. He feels that 'the effort was worth making', even though some of his 'statements are tentative'. 'I have at least tried to push the rivalry between British and Afrikaaners into the second place, and give the first place to the much more fundamental issue between European and non-European'. In a long postscript he recommends to Bower Macmillan's 'Cape Colour Question', a book which he hopes, along with his, will 'have some effect on South African opinion on the Native Question'.
