In conjunction with the School of Canon Law of the Catholic University of America, we are making available, both digitally and in print, more than 400 canon law dissertations from the 1920s to 1960s, many of which have long been unavailable. These volumes are rich in historical content, yet remain relevant to canon lawyers today. Topics covered include such issues as abortion, excommunication, and infertility. Several studies are devoted to marriage and the annulment process; the acquiring and disposal of church property, including the union of parishes; the role and function of priests, vicars general, bishops, and cardinals; and juridical procedures within the church. For those who seek to understand current ecclesial practices in light of established canon law, these books will be an invaluable resource.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. Autograph letter on prison letter paper, signed, Dated October 24, 1917. Some browning to fold marks. 4 sides, one side of printed "regulations as to communications" and three sides of closely written text in pencil. Approx 38cm x 23cm (opened). On 25th February 1915, London architect Sidney Turner appeared before a tribunal in Deptford to argue for absolute exemption from military service of any kind. The two page "Application As To Exemption that Turner presented to the tribunal, gave in his own words his belief why he should be exempted "I apply for absolute exemption since I cannot conscientiously undertake either combatant or non-combatant military service or in any way assist in the prosecution of the war. " "I have held my conscientious objection to war and the destruction of human life for many years and my beliefs have been continually strengthened as my knowledge of the subject has increased." The tribunals' decision was to reject his appeal, and Sidney Turner was given a custodial sentence for refusing to undertake military service and sent to Exeter and later Wandsworth Prisons to serve it. One of his letters from there, clearly stamped "Wandsworth" has survived. Prisoner number 3088 writes to his "Mater and Pater" about the political situation regarding CO's, and that he believes that they can no longer be ignored. He hopes for interesting developments from a Cabinet Committee which is meeting to consider the issue. The Home Office had enquired of prisons how many prisoners they held in different categories, " Accepted genuine" and so called "non genuine" objectors, and how long they had been imprisoned. Turner writes that he had been imprisoned for 14 months to date, and seems to expect release fairly soon. He writes about the failure of Lloyd George's Cabinet "which has been notable for three things, Boasting, Lying and muddle." He notes that his parents have talked about war weariness and writes that there is a place where it is more than weariness and that is in the trenches". He fears that" the question of food this winter will hardly bear thinking of , but the government will have to go very carefully. and I suppose it will mean food tickets fo ever everyone in the end like Germany .I know that I shall steer clear of meat as far as possible when I get home. Vegetarian living will have even more charm for me than it ever did before." Turner makes mention of various groups of CO's and his "friends in the country", and talks of Liberty of Conscience, suggesting that "we seem to have gone back to the days of Charles 1st.

Vintage matte black-and-white double weight studio still reference photograph from the 1948 film. From the collection of actor Van Heflin, who played Athos in the film. Based on Dumas' 1844 serialized novel. D'Artagnan (Kelly) travels to Paris to join the Musketeers, and does so by dispatching the evil Richelieu's (Vincent Price) men, not once but twice. Countess de Winter (Turner) has her own agenda, ultimately leading to her execution, as the Musketeers are exonerated of their own death sentences. Nominated for an Academy Award. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine overall.

Paperback. First Edition. Complete run of seven issues plus the final, rare "Suppressed Issue" produced in Canada. Landmark article "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" in issue #4 signed by Ralph Steadman in red ink. A very Near Fine set, bright and clean set; truly excellent shape. No subscriber labels. Some wraps and contents age-toned, staples occasionally rusted. Scanlan's was a counterculture magazine that broke down nearly as many boundaries as its predecessor, Ramparts, during its short existence. It launched "gonzo journalism" with the article "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" by Hunter S. Thompson, illustrated by Ralph Steadman, in its June 1970 issue-- that's the one with Nixon's face being punched into oblivion. Steadman's splattery signature graces the negative space around the derby-goer's head on the article's title page. He and Thompson would go on to collaborate on the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which brought gonzo journalism widespread popularity. The set also features work by R. Crumb, Alfred McCoy (author of The Politics of Heroin), JFK investigator Jim Garrison's cohort William Turner, and Robert Altman well as other Thompson (AKA Raoul Duke) and Steadman work.
