Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Two Autograph Letters Signed. Both letters are in near fine or better condition. Catherine Turner was a cousin, and long-time friend of Martineau, and was married to Martineau's cousin, Henry Turner, a Unitarian minister. Catherine is mentioned in Harriet Martineau's autobiography a number of times, and Martineau makes references to her in her letters. The letter's recipient, Maria Weston Chapman, was an American abolitionist. She was also Martineau's long-time friend, and literary executor, who was responsible for posthumously publishing her *Autobiography.* As Martineau noted in one of her letters, "On Monday I finished by autobiography, which spread out to two thick volumes, leaving one for Mrs. Chapman and Mr. Atkinson to say what they wish.". 1. ALS. Four pages (circa 76 lines), a single sheet, folded once to form four octavo pages, addressed from Park Terrace, Nottingham, March 24, 1879. The letter begins "I have waited till now to write my thanks for your most kind letter and gift of the American Edition of the Autobiography which it announces, hoping to tell you of the arrival of the three copies. I shall gladly transmit the two as you desire. My personal knowledge of you I regard as one of the many pleasures & advantages I have derived from dear Harriet's friendship, & to be remembered & commissioned by you at any time, I regard as an inheritance I value much! The book is very precious to me.". She continues, offering her observations on Harriet's autobiography, noting, "I hear her talk as I read," "the 3 vol. will carry me still further in vivid associations! I am not sure that the public here, will at present, at least, appreciate your additions. That you sh'd have been chosen by her for telling of the closing days & hours, was no wonder to those who knew your close friendship - your devoted love for her & your power of expression! Excuse me dear friend- you knew her better even than I did! I am dear friend your [word?] grateful, [signed] "Cath're Turner." 2. ALS. Seven pages, two sheets, folded to form eight octavo pages, densely written on seven pages, addressed from Park Terrace, Nottingham, and dated. April 19, [1879]. The letter states (in part): ". My desire to have some communication with you has been pressing on me more and more - in proportion as more Reviews & private opinions have crowded on me. The 3rd vol.- your vol. has been my best companion & [word?]." This is followed by discussions of Harriet's "dear brother James," and public reception and reviews and criticisms the book is receiving, and noting, "I am very glad you had notice sent you, that certain of us, received copies of the Auto. by her desire. America appreciates your [word?] work & your heart & your purse too.". The letter also includes much about personal and family matters, and closes, "Your [affectionate] and grateful friend, C. Turner." [N.B.: Martineau finished writing her autobiography in 1855, at which time Catherine Turner was staying with her, in what they both thought were Harriet's last days, having been diagnosed with a fatal heart condition, and thought to only have a few more months to live. Catherine is mentioned in Harriet's Autobiography a number of times-- see pp. 51, 476, 481, 629, etc. The English edition, and American edition, made reference to in this letter, were published posthumously, in 1877, edited and with additions by Maria Weston Chapman]. Significant correspondence about a feminist and pioneering female sociologist, Harriet Martineau, between two of her close friends and collaborators.
