In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fair. Two facsimile copies of uncertain age bound together in printed green paper covered boards with blue cloth spine overlaid with more modern green leatherette 15 x 23cm. The front cover only mentions Baker's work. No indication of who produced this or when, however I am very roughly estimating mid-20th century based on the appearance and condition. No like copies found - Copac and OCLC record only the first editions of each, and a modern reprint of the Baker. 1. Baker's Recent Operations (1852): vii + 78pp including original title page, with only the frontispiece illustration reproduced, plus two much more modern looking folding copies of two plates (The Attack of the Dunnoo Stockade; Rangoon in 1852) tipped on to the ffep. 2. Moong Shoay Doon's Journal (1836) (1) + 32 + 31pp with original title page and parallel Burmese and English text. Covers good only with some staining, tears and loss of paper. Binding secure. Interiors lightly tanned and very good apart from some worming that has penetrated through the boards.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, describing the military action immediately preceding the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Burmese War and the annexation of Lower Burma. Two folding panoramas show the city and the dramatic scene of British ships being attacked by the Dunnoo Stockade. Thomas Turner Baker was the chaplain aboard HMS Fox, one of the ships sent under Commodore George Lambert - described by Lord Dalhousie as the "combustible commodore" (quoted in Marshall, p. 234) - to blockade Rangoon and enforce the terms of the 1826 Treaty of Yandabo. Before the blockade, Lambert had already seized the flagship of King Pagan Min, inflaming the fragile situation. When British requests for reparations were refused, Dalhousie authorized a full-scale military expedition to bring the Burmese to heel. Compiled anonymously, the text is based on animated despatches sent by Baker up to March 1852, one month before his death from cholera. Copies are found with the frontispiece hand-coloured or uncoloured. Abbey 407. Adrian G. Marshall, Nemesis: The First Iron Warship and Her World, 2016. Octavo. With hand-coloured tinted frontispiece, 3 plates (2 folding). Original purple wavy-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards blocked in blind, yellow coated endpapers, binder's ticket of J. Dean on rear pastedown. Cloth sunned, spine worn, with lettered portion starting to lift, frontispiece bright: very good.

First Edition. First edition, slim 8vo, pp. vii, [1], 78; lithograph frontispiece, 3 lithograph plates (2 folding); original brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine; the binding a bit spotted and worn, but in all a good, sound copy, or better. A reliable eye-witness account of the first three months of the second Anglo-Burmese War by the late chaplin and naval instructor of the H.M.S. Fox who succumbed to cholera. Wikipedia notes: "In 1852, Commodore George Lambert was dispatched to Burma by Lord Dalhousie over a number of minor issues related to the Treaty of Yandabo between the countries. The Burmese immediately made concessions including the removal of a governor whom the Company made their casus belli. Lambert, described by Dalhousie in a private letter as the "combustible commodore," eventually provoked a naval confrontation in extremely questionable circumstances by blockading the port of Rangoon and seizing the King Pagan's royal ship and thus started the Second Anglo-Burmese War which ended in the Company annexing the province of Pegu and renaming it Lower Burma . The first substantial blow . was struck by the Company on 5 April 1852, when the port of Martaban was taken. Rangoon was occupied on the 12th and the Shwedagon Pagoda on the 14th, after heavy fighting, when the Burmese army retired northwards. Bassein was seized on 19 May, and Pegu was taken on 3 June.".
