Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An Apology for African Methodism is a passionate and eloquent defense of the African Methodist Episcopal Church by one of its most prominent leaders, Benjamin Tucker Tanner. Written in the late 19th century, when the AME Church was facing intense scrutiny and criticism from both within and outside the African American community, this book is a powerful reminder of the vital role that religion has played in the struggle for social justice and equality in America.

Octavo (19.5cm); staplebound self-wrappers; [16]pp. A hint of wear and toning to wrapper extremities, else Near Fine. Tucker's oft-reprinted essay, first published in the anarchist journal Liberty in 1888. Of this odd little reprint, we can say little other than that it is scarce (OCLC gives 4 locations) and that this appears to be the only publication ever to have appeared under the "Chas. W. Bergman" imprint, which appears under the Price List on upper wrapper verso. The brief introductory essay by Bergman mentions a few suggestions for further reading, from the publication dates of which we deduce a date of ca. 1910.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good-. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [moderate wear to edges and extremities, slight exposure of boards at lower corners, previous owner's stamp and another previous owner's signature on ffep (the two sharing a last name, probably a father and son; see notes)]. (B&W photo frontispiece of the author) Primarily an anthology of writings (articles, essays, letters to the editor) from the publication "Liberty," founded in 1881 by Tucker and published by him until 1908. Per scholar Wendy McElroy, it's "widely considered to be the finest individualist-anarchist periodical ever issued in the English language," and (per Wikipedia) "was instrumental in developing and formalizing the individualist anarchist philosophy through publishing essays and serving as a format for debate." The writings of Tucker (1854-1939), an anarchist and socialist, (again quoting Wikipedia) "contributed to the development of both left-libertarian and right-libertarian political theory in the United States and were often reprinted in early libertarian journals." The book opens with an essay, "State Socialism and Anarchism: How Far They Agree and Wherein They Differ"; the remainder of its contents are organized under the following headings: The Individual, Society, and the State; Money and Interest; Land and Rent; Socialism; Communism; Methods; and Miscellaneous. 512 pages, including the Index, plus two pages of advertisements in the back: one for "Liberty" itself ('The Pioneer Organ of Anarchism in America"; subscription two dollars a year), the other a list of a dozen works of "Anarchistic Literature" that could be mail-ordered from Mr. Tucker. The book was published in London in 1895 and Tucker himself issued a second edition in 1897, but this 1893 printing was the first; library holdings are plentiful enough, per OCLC, but quite scarce in commerce. The ownership stamp on the ffep is that of Frank E. Hartung, a long-serving (1942-1978) professor of sociology at Wayne State University; the signature, just beneath it, is of Dr. Urban L. Hartung, Sr., presumably Prof. Hartung's father.

First Edition. 12mo (15cm); staple bound wrappers; 15pp. A few tiny spots of foxing, still Near Fine. First Separate Edition. 12mo (17cm.); staplebound self-wrappers; 10pp. Shallow chips and tiny losses to wrapper extremities, the whole a bit toned and dust-soiled, else Very Good and sound. Publisher's advertisements printed on pp. [11] and [14] (rear wrapper). Satirical short essay by a founding editor of "Le Rire," describing the trades of "The State," from art collector to tapestry weaver, from transportation enterprise to colonialism. Though "The State" is everywhere, it is also nothing, and the essay opens with the description of a man being thrown out of the chamber of deputies, taken for a madman trying to make an appointment with "The State." First published in the original French in "Le Figaro" and translated for publication in Tucker's individualist anarchist magazine "Liberty." See Roger E. Stoddard, "Liberty's Library: Benj. R. Tucker's Imprint, 1875-1912," in "Essays in Honor of William B. Todd" (1991), p. 170. OCLC locates four physical copies in North America as of October, 2019, at Columbia, NYU, Harvard, and U. Michigan.

Second Edition. Octavo. Publisher's blue-gray cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine; blind-stamped decorative borders to front board; red edge-stain; frontispiece portrait; x,[1]-512,[1]pp. A slightly worn copy; boards evenly rubbed and soiled, with board exposure at upper corner-tips and rubbing to cloth at spine ends; both hinges thinly cracked (but holding); text clean and unmarked. A sound, Good or better copy. Perhaps the clearest exposition ever published of individualist anarchism, written by the movement's foremost exponent in America. The work is comprised of selections from Tucker's voluminous, incisive, often acidic articles in his long-running journal Liberty. These are arranged thematically, in chapters such as "The Individual, Society, and the State;" "Money and Interest;" "Land and Rent;" "Socialism;" "Communism;" etc. Tucker, who had a reputation for not questioning the fallibility of his own ideas, clearly intended the book to be used as a sort of "Bible" of anarchism, a notion alluded to in Paul Avrich's 1973 interview with Tucker's daughter Oriole, who stated, ".the whole family lived an anarchistic life. When I asked a question - like how in the world would we get along without police - Father would say look it up on page so and so of Instead of a Book." (Avrich, Anarchist Portraits. Princeton: 1988 p.151). This second edition is on noticeably inferior paper (the 1893 edition bulks a full quarter inch thicker) and is rather more commonly seen in commerce than the moderately scarce first. Still, a presentable copy of a cornerstone work in the American anarchist canon. NURSEY-BRAY (Anarchist Thinkers & Thought: An Annotated Bibliography) 928.

First English Language Edition. Octavo (19.5cm.); publisher's red gilt-lettered cloth; 312,[3](ads)pp.; added color lithographic title page. Light shelf wear, miniscule damp spot to upper cover, spine a shade darkened, contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper and bookplate to front pastedown, late 20th-century bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, else Very Good or better. Though first published in France in 1843, "Mon Oncle Benjamin" was not previously available to an English-speaking readership before individualist anarchist publisher Benjamin R. Tucker's translation, which appeared just in time for Christmas, 1890. The novel, which is set in the last days of the reign of Louis XV and into that of the doomed Louis XVI, recounts the exploits of a hapless doctor, the eponymous Uncle Benjamin, who takes poorly to the administering of medicine but excels at drinking and accruing unpaid debts. Like many novels Tucker chose to translate and publish, "My Uncle Benjamin" is not overtly anarchist, though as one early review notes, "very little thought [is given] sometimes for the sensibilities of the pious or the delicate reader, but with tender regard to the sacredness of human rights and feelings" (from "The Brooklyn Daily Eagle" (under the header "A Virile Old French Novel"), December 28, 1890).

First American Edition. 12mo (17cm.); publisher's orange decorative card wrappers; 143pp. Some wear to wrapper extremities including shallow chips at spine ends, faint dampstain to top edge of upper cover not bleeding into textblock, else a Very Good, tight and unfaded copy. Though Tolstoy never considered himself an anarchist, he was among the American movement's literary darlings due to his sympathetic portrayals of the peasant class and anti-militarist views. The present translation, by radical publisher and individualist anarchist Benjamin R. Tucker, was his major bestseller (62,000 copies reported) and ran into multiple printings despite being banned from the mails under the Comstock Act for indecency (the novella portrays a man whose jealousy leads him to murder his wife). The only other copies of this title currently on the market (November, 2018) are later printings. Reference: Candace Falk, ed. "Emma Goldman: A Documentary History of the American Years," Vol. 1, p. 559. No priority established between this and the first London edition, both first appearing in June, 1890 (see "Bibliography of Russian Literature in English Translation to 1945," p. 42).
