New experimental observations and the insight gained through direct numerical simulations have been stimulating research in turbulence…and are leading to the developments of new concepts. The organisers felt the necessity to bring together researchers who have contributed significantly to the advances in this field in a colloquium in which the current achievements and the future development in the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches would be discussed. The main emphasis of the colloquium was put on discussions. These discussions led to an interesting and exciting exchange of ideas, but also involved its very laborious transcription onto paper. It was due to the personal efforts of Mrs. A. Vyskocil, Dr. N. Malik and Dr. X. Studerus that this work could be completed. The colloquium was held in the relaxed atmosphere of the Centro Stefano Franscini in Monte Verita near Ascona, a locality of exceptional natural beauty, which was put at our disposal by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The main goal of the Colloquium was to bring together in the relaxed atmo sphere of Monte Verita a group of leading… scientists (consisting of representatives of different generations) and to discuss informally and free of the influence of funding agencies and/or other 'politics' of nonscientific nature the basic issues of turbulence. The intention was to put major emphasis on the exposition of the problematic aspects and discussion(s) - not mere reporting of results, i. e. not hav ing just one more meeting. For this purpose it was originally thought to leave all the afternoons free of formal presentations at all. However, this intention became unrealistic due to a number of reasons, and, in the first place, due to strong pres sure from various parts of the scientific community and non-scientific constraints to broaden the scope and to increase the number of participants as compared to the First Colloquium held in 1991. This resulted in a considerable reduction of time for discussions. Nevertheless, the remaining time for discussions was much larger than usually allocated at scientific conferences. On the scientific side the main idea was to bring together scientists work ing in turbulence from different fields, such as mathematics, physics, engineering and others. A new chapter titled Analogies, misconceptions and ill defined concepts was added along with a number of new sections on such topics as ergodicity, Eulerian versus Lagrangian descriptions, on validation of theories, on anomalous scaling and ill posedness of the concept of inertial range, on the Tennekes and Lumlety balance, and mathematics versus turbulence among others. The main emphasis is on conceptual and problematic aspects, physical phenomena, observations, misconceptions and unresolved issues rather than on conventional formal…istic aspects, models, etc. Apart from the obvious fundamental importance of turbulent flows such an emphasis is a consequence of the view that without corresponding progress in fundamental aspects there is little chance for progress in any applications such as drag reduction, mixing, control and modeling of turbulence. More generally there is a desperate need for physical fundamentals of the technological processes in which turbulence plays a central role.The conceptual issues are made dominant in this second edition. This required to address in more detail those misconceptions which are the consequence of the profound difficulties of the subject and which travel from one publication to another. A new chapter titled Analogies, misconceptions and ill defined concepts was added along with a number of new sections on such topics as ergodicity, Eulerian versus Lagrangian descriptions, on validation of theories, on anomalous scaling and ill posedness of the concept of inertial range, on the Tennekes and Lumlety balance, and mathematics versus turbulence among others. Many of these are to a large extent a consequence of the series of lectures delivered in the Imperial College London in 2007 and 2008 in the frame of Marie Curie Chair in Fundamental and Conceptual Aspects of Turbulent Flows which was held by the author during the period June 1, 2006 - May 31, 2009.
