Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Hardcover. 264 pages. Bound in original full leather, which is chipped and scuffed and partially torn off in a couple places, but which is still attached both front and back. Glue residue (from a book cover that has since been removed) on inside covers. A name has been clipped from the top of the title page, but the handwritten date March 1801 and the words Harlow and Essex are still there. Half title page with an engraving of an old man leading the way for a younger one, and the words see with your own eyes in the engraving. Verso of that half-title engraving is the Trusler coat of arms, which serves as a frontispiece to the book. 5 page introduction before the pagination begins at page 1. Page 19/20 has a long closed tear. Page 37/38 is missing a large chunk from the upper corner. 29 of the first 30 engravings are hand-colored (but not particularly well). The rest, about 100 of them, are in the original condition. They are a very fine set of illustrations, showing in great detail various trades; printing, shopkeeping, tailor, fishing & angling, tanner, brick making, brewing, and more. There are hot air balloons, Africans, shipwrecks, executions and pillories, as well as illustrations showing all the punishments of heaven. There are images of the human skeleton and organs, muscles and blood vessels. There are several nudes, both male and female. All are full of life and detail. The illustrator, John Bewick, is often regarded as the first professional illustrator. His is best know for his collaboration with his more famous older bother Thomas on Gay s Fables; they produced a herbal together as well. A scarce illustrated title. Full leather bindings with gilt and blank impressing, all edges gilt. Worn spines. Slightly less wear to edges and corners. Bookplates on front endpapers in both volumes. Some foxing and offsetting. Title continues: "in a Series of Engravings: with Descriptions, and A Comment on Their Moral Tendency, by the Rev. John Trusler. To Which are Added, Anecdotes of the Author and His Works, by J. Hogarth and J. Nichols." As a clergyman, Rev. John Trusler was probably fascinated by Hogarth's combination of art and morality. He therefore compiled this collection of engravings showcasing the unparalleled talent of the renowned 18th-century artist. For each engraving, Trusler provided commentary explaining the satirical and moralistic themes. The result is a comical look at British society in the 1700s that's entertaining to this very day. A Midnight Modern Conversation (Vol. I opposite p. 57) may look like a few parties you attended yourself.
