Spine stained brown with age. Pages, however, still in good condition.The only literary â??W. B.â?? that most of us know is Yeats. But there was another one just under a century ago, who was rated highly by people like Conrad and Wells, and who is now sometimes seen by the few readers who remember him as a precursor of Hemingway in terms of his ruthlessly pared-back style. His books are increasingly hard to come by, but they are well worth reading.He was an expatriate American, whose work was much in demand during the second and third decades of the last century. â??Miramarâ?? is one of the rarer of his eight novels. Like many of the others it paints a bleak and jaundiced picture of the lives of the wealthy. It opens with a suicide and an orphaned child. It ends with a tragic case of blindness. Much drama fills the intervening pages.

Novel exposing the posturings of brothers Clancy and Reuben, the too-emancipated offspring of meek, prosperous American parents. Statement from a bio of Trites- "American expatriate author W. B. Trites. Although Trites was highly praised by such contemporaries as H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, W. B. Maxwell, Max Beerbohm, L. P. Hartley, and Frank Harris, among others, he remains curiously unknown today. His spare style, which predated Hemingway's by several decades, did not impress publishers accustomed to more expansive prose. Worse still, his prospects suffered from the forbidden social subjects that he dared to explore in a less open era, when publishers shied away from controversial topics. Richard Rex's masterful discussion of Trites's remarkable novels includes contemporary reviews, comments on the author's themes, his negotiations with publishers, and biographical details heretofore unknown.' Slight foxing at fore-edge, otherwise very good indeed in slightly short, very good d/w with faint edgewear. Very small number '29' at rear top inside corner of jacket, written by Gollancz on their file copies to note the year of publication.
