Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The book presents results of successful projects completed at Hamelmalo Agricultural College, Eritrea, with a mission to ensure zero runoff from agricultural lands and harvest at least part of the runoff from non-agricultural lands in the watershed for crop use. As output of the mission, rainfed sorghum yields increased from 2.4 t ha-1 and irrigated yields to >4 t ha-1 by one irrigation and to >5 t ha-1 by two irrigations. Rainfed yields on sloping lands increased to 1.7 t ha-1 on 35% slope, 2.7 t ha-1 on 25% slope and 3.8 t ha-1 on 5% slope through adoption of bed-furrow technology. Rice yields were >2 - 4 t ha-1 under runoff farming and irrigated conditions. Wheat yields in Asmara were >5.6 t ha-1. First 4 chapters deal with situation analysis in terms of knowledge gap and available resources. Next 5 chapters deal with different watersheds, their development technology and expansion on farmers¿ fields. The remaining chapters deal with crop production technology development involving students and farmers. Each chapter is written in a professional manner for use by policy makers, students, researchers, teachers and agricultural extension workers in semiarid regions.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 192 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume represents the proceedings of the Fifth Congress of the International Society of Ocular Toxicology (ISOT), which was held at the Grove Park Inn and Resort in Asheville, North Carolina, October 13-17, 1996. We are delighted to present this volume to the ophthalmic community, especially those with a significant interest in ocular toxicol ogy. The Fifth Congress was developed around themes relating to ocular drug metabolism, the ocular pathophysiological effects of nitric oxide, government issues relating to the use of alternative methods for toxicity testing, and a workshop that encompassed comparisons of both in vitro versus in vivo models as well as different animal models. The outcome of this congress, embodied in this volume, is a contribution to the methodologies currently employed or under development and to various drug or physical effects on different ocular tissues. While the focus of this proceedings is on ocular effects of drugs or other materials, many of the contributions deal with topics that have a much broader interest. The workshop concerning the use of different model systems and the choice of the best animal model for drug testing covers a wide range of interests that ex tends far beyond specific ocular effects. This is especially true in the area of alternative methods and in the choice of the best animal model for examination of different disease entities.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Nanotechnology for Abiotic Stress Tolerance and Management in Crop Plants reviews the most recent literature on the role of nanomaterials in achieving sustainability in crop production in stressful environments. The book explores the adverse conditions caused by abiotic stress to crop plants and the methods by which these conditions can be potentially overcome through developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, temperature stress, excessive water, heavy metal stress, and UV stress are major factors which may adversely affect the growth, development, and yield of crops. While recent research for ways of overcoming the physiological and biochemical changes brought on by these stresses has focused on genetic engineering of plants, additional research continues into alternative strategies to develop stress tolerant crops, including the use of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
