Howard Orville Triebold publizierte in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren zu analytischer Chemie, Lebensmittelchemie und angewandter Agrarchemie. Er gehört zu jener Generation amerikanischer Chemiker, die die quantitative Analyse aus dem akademischen Labor herauslösten und für industrielle Anwendungen insbesondere Lebensmittel- und Agrarprodukte systematisierten. Seine Arbeiten sind bedeutsam, weil sie die Brücke zwischen klassischer Analytik und der entstehenden industriellen Qualitätskontrolle schlagen. Die Metallgesellschaft war in zahlreichen Bereichen tätig, in denen quantitative Analyse unverzichtbar war von der Prüfung mineralischer Rohstoffe über Zwischenprodukte der chemischen Industrie bis hin zu agrarischen Handelsgütern, die der Konzern traditionell im Portfolio hatte. Triebolds Werk bot die klassischen analytischen Methoden, die für die Bestimmung von Reinheit, Zusammensetzung, Feuchte, Aschegehalt und anderen Qualitätsparametern essenziell waren und damit ein grundlegendes Werkzeug für Laboratorien und Qualitätskontrolle im Konzern.
