"America's Classic Murder" [Trial]. Bemis, George. Webster, John White [1793-1850], Defendant. Report of the Case of John W. Webster, Master of Arts and Doctor of Medicine of Harvard University [.] Indicted for the Murder of George Parkman, Master of Arts of Harvard University, Doctor of Medicine of the University of Aberdeen, And Member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, Before The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts; Including the Hearing on the Petition for a Writ of Error, The Prisoner's Confessional Statements and Application for a Commutation of Sentence, And an Appendix Containing Several Interesting Matters Never Before Published. Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1850. xii, 628 pp. With a tissue-guarded frontispiece. Illustrated. Octavo (9-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Later library cloth, red and black lettering pieces to spine, endpapers renewed, cloth hinges. Light soiling and shelfwear to exterior, lettering pieces abraded, hinges starting, small ink stamp (William C. Schroeder) to front free endpaper, which has a small clean tear to its upper gutter. Toning to interior, light soiling and tiny faint stains in a few places, owner signature of J.H. Anthon dated 1858 to front endleaf and title page along with owner signature of J.B. Coppinger, pencil underling and brief annotations to several leaves (annotations between pp. 469-498). $85. * First edition. As McDade notes, "The murder in the Harvard Medical School of Dr. George Parkman, a prominent Bostonian and Harvard Alumnus, by Professor John W. Webster was, in the words of Edmund Pearson, 'America's classic murder.'" The present account is "the basic book on the case and contains all the evidence." A two-volume edition appeared the same year and the work was reprinted in 1879. The J.H. Anthon who owned this copy was likely John Hone Anthon [1832-1874], a New York attorney and the son of John Anthon, an important American jurist and a founder of the New York Law Institute. J.B. Coppinger may have been John B. Coppinger, a first lieutenant and adjutant in the 83d New York Infantry during the Civil War. The pencil annotations, which provide brief but often lively commentary, do not appear to be in either's hand. McDade, The Annals of Murder 1060.

  • 1p., on 29 x 7 cm piece of unwatermarked laid paper (probably cut down), with no indication of printer or date. Printed with the long s. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines, arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation, | Listen to my plaintive strain, | Tho' exalted be my station! | Day and night I sigh in pain; | Here I came a helpless stranger, | With no friend to take my part, | Braved the stormy ocean's danger, | From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' (i.e. King George III, whose wife is described as 'your Queen, a pious lady'), asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample | On decency's offended laws'. (A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey.) The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating, | Childless mother, widow'd wife! | My lost titles none repeating, | Let me lead a peaceful life. | When you think on my sad story, | Britons, drop a pitying tear! | And fair England's fame and glory | Shall to me be ever dear!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library, or on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and no other reference discovered. From the papers of Sir William Hamilton (1788-1877), British Consul at Boulogne-sur-Mer from 1826 to 1873.

224pp. Contemp. half calf. Bookplate and stamps on e.ps. only of L.A. Law Library. ESTC T44505. Sackville, 1716-1785, after his return to England, he demanded a court martial to clear his name. However, the court found him guilty of disobeying orders and imposed one of the strongest verdicts ever rendered against a general officer. The court's verdict not only upheld his discharge, but ruled that he was '. unfit to serve His Majesty in any military Capacity whatever', then ordered that the verdict be read to and entered in the orderly book of every regiment in the army. The king had Sackville's name struck from the Privy Council rolls. It is strange that the same man should later be in charge of the British troops waging war in America, but no surprise, perhaps, that he undertook the task so ineptly.

"Perfidy and Depravity" [Trial]. Spencer-Churchill, George [1766-1840], Defendant. Report of the Cause between Charles Sturt, Esq. Plaintiff, And the Most Noble The Marquis of Blandford, Defendant, For Criminal Conversation with the Right Hon. Lady Mary Ann Sturt; Tried in the Court of King's Bench, Westminster, On Wednesday, The 27th May 1801, Before Lord Kenyon, And a Special Jury. With an Appendix, Containing the Letters of the Parties Which Did Not Appear on the Trial; A Preface, And Notes. London: Printed for J. Spencer-Churchill, known for his free-wheeling lifestyle, had an affair with Sturt's wife. Sturt had himself been unfaithful, as he himself admitted during the trial and in the preface to this work. This did not temper his anger. Feeling betrayed at the marquis's conduct, which he describes as "a singular instance of perfidy and depravity," he brought a suit for ?20,000. The judge concluded that Sturt's adultery had precluded damages, but the jury disagreed and awarded him one hundred pounds. Derby: W. Bemrose & Sons, [1864] (illustrator). Derby: W. Bemrose & Sons, [1864]. With "Dr. Winslow's Analysis of the Convict's Mind" [Trial]. Townley, George Victor [b. 1838], Defendant. The Trial and Respite of George Victor Townley for Wilful Murder. With Original Documents and Correspondence Now First Published; Dr. Winslow's Analysis of the Convict's Mind, Portraits, Autographs and Plan. Derby: W. Bemrose & Sons, [1864]. [iii], 6-70 pp. Portraits. Plan. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-3/4"; 18.4 x 12 cm). Stab-stitched pamphlet in printed wrappers. Negligible light soiling to exterior, early owner signature (St. John Crookes/ Sunderland/ 1864) to head of front wrapper, moderate toning to text, slightly heavier in places. $450. * Only edition. In 1863 Townley murdered his girlfriend, Elizabeth Goodwin, after she broke off her engagement to him. An expert witness at Townley's trial was Dr. Forbes Winslow, one of the founders of forensic psychiatry and the author of The Plea of Insanity, In Criminal Cases (1843). Despite Winslow's testimony, Townsend was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was granted a reprieve, however, after evidence was produced confirming hereditary insanity and a history of delusional behavior. Public outrage over the reprieve led to a second committee investigation, which judged him to be sane. Our account includes memorials from the public and the committee's report, along with Winslow's account of a visit with Townley in prison. Townley was later transferred to an asylum, where he committed suicide. The portraits are of Townley and Goodwin; the plan shows the scene of the crime. Crookes was a British antiquary and bibliophile with an interest in true crime, particularly provincial murder cases. OCLC locates 11 copies in North American law libraries. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School (1909) II:1210.
