Mass market paperback. Zustand: Good. Jack Gaughan (Tonight cover) and Kelly Freas (Wage (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. 173 pages (Tonight) and 79 [4] pages (The Wagered) Illustrations. John William Jakes (March 31, 1932 March 11, 2023) was an American writer, best known for historical and speculative fiction. His American Civil War trilogy, North and South, has sold millions of copies worldwide. He was also the author of The Kent Family Chronicles. Jakes used the pen name Jay Scotland among others. Thrilling Wonder Stories, edited by Sam Merwin, published two 19491950 letters from Jakes and two of his stories were published in pulp magazines edited by Howard Browne late in 1950, The Dreaming Trees (Fantastic Adventures, November) and "Your Number Is Up!" (Amazing Stories, December). Jakes sold his first short story in 1950. Twenty-eight more speculative fiction stories by Jakes were published 1951 to 1953. He then published dozens of stories and several novels during the twenty years following completion of college, many of them fantasy fiction, science fiction and westerns, and other sorts of historical fiction. Laurence M. Janifer (born Laurence M. Harris; March 17, 1933 July 10, 2002) was an American science fiction author, with a career spanning over 50 years. Though his first published work was a short story in Cosmos magazine in 1953, his career as a writer can be said to have started in 1959 when he began writing for Astounding and Galaxy Science Fiction. He co-wrote the novel in the "Psi-Power" series: Brain Twister, with Randall Garrett under the joint pseudonym Mark Phillips. The novel was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, and published in book form in 1962. S. J. Stephen John] Treibich (1936-1972) was a US author who began publishing work of genre interest with "First Contact" for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction with Laurence M Janifer in August 1965, and who, also with Janifer, wrote the Angelo di Stefano series of Space Operas: Target: Terra, The High Hex and The Wagered World. John Brian Francis "Jack" Gaughan, pronounced like 'gone' (September 24, 1930 July 21, 1985), was an American science fiction artist and illustrator and multiple winner of the Hugo Award in the category of Best Professional Artist. Gaughan died on July 21, 1985, in Springfield, Ohio. In his memory, the New England Science Fiction Association presents the annual Jack Gaughan Award for best emerging science fiction illustrator. Gaughan was posthumously inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2015. Frank Kelly Freas (August 27, 1922 January 2, 2005) was an American artist known for his work in science fiction and fantasy, with a career spanning more than 50 years. He was known as the "Dean of Science Fiction Artists" and he was the second artist inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. The fantasy magazine Weird Tales published the first cover art by Freas on its November 1950 issue: "The Piper" illustrating "The Third Shadow" by H. Russell Wakefield. His second was a year later in the same magazine, followed by several Planet Stories or Weird Tales covers and interior illustrations for three Gnome Press books in 1952. Over the next five decades, he created covers for hundreds of books and magazines (and much more interior artwork), notably Astounding Science Fiction, both before and after its title change to Analog, from 1953 to 2003. He started at Mad magazine in February 1957 and by July 1958 was the magazine's new cover artist; he painted most of its covers until October 1962 (featuring the iconic character, Alfred E. Neuman). He also created cover illustrations for DAW, Signet, Ballantine Books, Avon, all 58 Laser Books (which are now collectors' items), and over 90 covers for Ace books alone. He was among several of the inaugural recipients of the Hugo Award for Best Artist in 1955 and was recipient under different names of the next three conferred in 1956, 1958, and 1959. With six more Hugo awards to his name (1970 and 197276), he became the first person to receive ten Hugo awards (he was nominated 20 times). No other artist in science fiction has consistently matched his record and output.
