In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Barbara Hepworth (Dustwrapper illustration) (illustrator). First Edition. Third impression of the true first edition, published in November 1964, a few months after the first impression came out. The photograph on the jacket is of Barbara Hepworth's 'Single Form', a memorial to Dag Hammarskjöld in front of the Secretariat building at UNO headquarters in New York. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps, creases or tears to the cloth - just slight creasing to the top and tail of the spine and lower corner tips. The page block edges are nice and white, with no foxing. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good photographic illustrated dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 25s net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears, but the edges and folds are rubbed and creased, mainly at the head and tail of the spine and corner tips. The back panel is much cleaner than is usually found with this title. Spine of dustwrapper slightly marked and discoloured. ***186 pages. 222mm x 145mm. ***'After Dag Hammarskjöld's death, the manuscript of Vägmärken was found in his house in New York together with the folowing undated letter, addressed to the swedish Permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Leif Belfrage. ***"Dear Leif: Perhaps you may remember I once told you that, in spite of everything, I kept a diary which I wanted you to take charge of someday. Here it is. It was begun without a thought of anybody else reading it, But, what with my later history and all that has been said and written about me, the situation has changed. These entries provide the only true 'profile' that can be drawn. That is why, during recent years, I have reckoned with the possibility of publication, though I have continued to write for myself, not for the public. If you find them worth publishing, you have my permission to do so - as a sort of 'White Book' concerning my negotiations with myself - and with God.' [Taken from a Note at the beginning of the book] ***'Dag Hammarskjöld 29 Jul 1905 - 18 Sep 1961) was a Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations. Hammarskjöld still remains the youngest person to have held the post, being only 47 years old when he was appointed in 1953. His second term was cut short when he died in the crash of his DC-6 airplane in Northern Rhodesia while en route to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis. He is the only person to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize posthumously.' ***'Vägmärken (Markings, or more literally Waymarks), published in 1963, is the only book by former UN secretary general, Dag Hammarskjöld. The journal was discovered after his death, with a covering letter to his literary executor. After the original Swedish version was published in 1963, the English translation came out in 1964. The translation was done by noted Swedish scholar Leif Sjöberg, and was refined by the poet W. H. Auden, who also wrote a foreword. This brought the book immediate literary notice, and even a front-page rave in The New York Times Book Review. It is highly regarded as a classic of contemporary spiritual literature. (Wiki) ***A near fine copy of Dag Hammarskjöld's only published book, which was reprinted three times in the year of publication, in its original dustwrapper, in nice original condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

He was one of the "Children of the '60s," a new wave of iconic Soviet intellectuals led by the Khrushchev Thaw. Voznesensky was considered "one of the most daring writers of the Soviet era" but his style often led to regular criticism from his contemporaries and he was once threatened with expulsion by Nikita Khrushchev. He performed poetry readings in front of sold-out stadiums around the world, and was much admired for his skilled delivery. Some of his poetry was translated into English by W. H. Auden. Voznesensky's long-serving mentor and muse was Boris Pasternak, the Nobel Laureate and the author of Doctor Zhivago. Before his death, he was both critically and popularly proclaimed "a living classic", and "an icon of Soviet intellectuals"'.
