5. Juni 1656 in Aix-en-Provence - gest. 28.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) studied with the Jesuits and quickly became interested in botany, which he began to learn from an apothecary in Aix-en-Provence. In 1679, he went to Montpellier to study medicine taking the opportunity to inventory the region's flora. After a stay in Barcelona, he returned to Montpellier and assembled a renowned herbarium that caught the attention of the royal physician Guy-Crescent Fagon. On the king's orders, he embarked in March 1700 on a journey to the Levant. His observations, published posthumously, concerned not only botany but also archaeology, geography and ethnology. Upon his return from the journey he was appointed in 1706 as a professor at the Royal College and holder of the Chair of Medicine and Botany.

Hardcover. Zustand: gut. Paris, Typographia regia 1700-1703. Pitton de Tournefort travelled extensively in the Archipelago, visiting most of the islands in the Cyclades (Andros, Tinos, Delos, Santorini etc.) and many in the Northern Sporades (Samos, Mitylene, Skyros, Tenedos). He also spent a considerable period in Crete before going to Constantinople and Asia Minor, the coast of the Black Sea and then overland through Armenia to Persia. The travellers returned to Paris in June 1702. Pitton de Tournefort began to prepare his manuscript for publication, but his health failed after the printing of vol. Annotation à l'encre rouge au contreplat du premier tome "Payé en 1835 45 francs" ; l'auteur de cette annotation a également numéroté toutes les planches, donné une table manuscrite pour les planches du tome I et a précisé, au titre du 1er tome : "[Avec] 151 (i.e. 152) planches représentant fidèlement.".
