Arch. Neurol. Psychiat., 30. - Chicago, American Medical Association, November, 1933, gr.8°, 11 pp., 11 Fig., orig. wrappers. First Edition! Montreal Neurological Institute Montreal, Canada, Reprint No.23. "Since the time of Dandy's initial description of ventriculography1 and encephalography2 there have been many publications of the ventriculographic findings in abnormal cases.3 But surprisingly little attention has been paid to the true anatomic significance of the gas shadows of the normal ventricle. This oversight has resulted in glaring mistakes in ventriculographic interpretation, published unwittingly. It has resulted further in diagnostic errors (usually unpublished) which were due not to the true limitations of the method but rather to a lack of knowledge of the basic principles of interpretation." Torkildsen & Penfield Arne Torkildsen (1899-1968) was a Norwegian neurosurgeon. He described the surgical technique of ventriculocisternostomy (lateral ventricle to cisterna magna; a predecessor of today's endoscopic third ventriculostomy), which is also called "Torkildsen's operation".* Wilder Graves Penfield (1891-1976) was an American-Canadian neurosurgeon. He expanded brain surgery's methods and techniques, including mapping the functions of various regions of the brain such as the cortical homunculus. His scientific contributions on neural stimulation expand across a variety of topics including hallucinations, illusions, dissociation and déjà vu. Penfield devoted much of his thinking to mental processes, including contemplation of whether there was any scientific basis for the existence of the human soul.
