Esta obra, clave en la historiografía sobre el origen de la prisión moderna, señala brillantemente el marco de preocupaciones sociales que entonces se viven en el «viejo mundo» como irresolubles. Los costes de las alternativas a la reclusión social, el aumento de la miseria social y la reincidencia en los países más desarrollados, el fracaso de la regeneración social y la vivencia de la pena de muerte como una vergonzosa lacra pública son las urgencias sociales a cuya reparación acude un nuevo sistema penitenciario venido del «nuevo mundo» y auspiciado por las sectas cuáqueras. In 1831 Beaumont and De Tocqueville were commissioned by the French government to examine America's latest prisons, which were renowned for their innovative approaches to penology. Their nine-month tour included visits to prisons in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. "Du Systeme Penitentiaire aux Etats-Unis", the result of their tour, was an immediate success that was quickly translated into English and German. It was one of the most influential books on penology ever written. The authors were affected deeply by their experiences in the United States.
