The Vladivostok Summit Meeting on Arms Control took place in 1974 between sitting President Gerald R. Ford and Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev, with the intention of extending arms control provisions between the United States and USSR. Both agreed to limit certain types of weapons, with some calling the summit the peak of détente between the nations. In this speech before the University of California, San Diego in 1986, Ford was cautiously critical of the Reagan administration's approach to arms control with the USSR, thinking that some of the gains in 1974 had been lost. Signed speech from former President Gerald R. Folio, 11 pp. On the rectos of eleven leaves of Britannia paper watermarked 'W H FELLOWS | 1841'. Held together with string. Text clear and complete. In ink, with deletions and emendations in pencil. Good, on aged paper. Docketed on reverse of last leaf. The subject of the poem is the execution of Conradine in the market square in Naples, 29 October 1268. The first section (3 pp) begins 'Italia fair Italia unto thee, | Was beauty given twice with misery, | At once the loveliest and the loveliest clime, | Thou wert the seat of Empire, and of crime; [.]'. An alternative to the last line has been written in, and deleted: 'Thy charms were only equalled by thy crime'. The second section (4 pp, originally titled 'The Morning immediately before the Execution') begins At that sweet hour when twilight into day, | Dips her dark wing, and mistlike fades away, [.]'. It contains another poem (deleted by the author), entitled 'Good Bye & Farewell', beginning 'The thrilling whisper of "Good Bye", | Thou not unmix'd with pain, | Seems to anticipate the joy, | Of meeting once again.' The third section (4 pp) begins 'Close to the castle walls, and just beneath, | A solemn scaffold rear'd its form of death, | While close around a dense and bristling mass, | Of soldiers, occupied the meanest place; [.]'. The author is not named. It may be a coincidence, but a review of M. E. Jeffreys 'Hoel the Hostage and other Poems' in the Metropolitan Magazine for June 1842 mentions that the volume contains a poem by this title, one of a number of historical narratives, 'replete with animation and descriptive spirit'.…

Notable wear to the spine, cracked along the hinge. Text block stable. Toning and scattered foxing throughout. This work was first published by Joseph Crukshank in Philadelphia in 1774. (Sabin 105211) (Howes W669). Woolman's influential Quaker antislavery essay, "Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes," was first published in Philadelphia in 1754. He argued that slave holding violated Christian conscience, natural justice, and the Golden Rule. It helped shape the Society of Friends' growing opposition to slavery and remains one of the important early American abolitionist writings. (Blockson, 17). This scarce work by John Sanderson was first printed in the United States in 1838, with the title "Sketches Of Paris: In Familiar Letters to His Friends by An American Gentleman." It was published by E.L. Carey of Philadelphia. It is a collection of letters and travel reflections of a teacher and writer, John Sanderson, who traveled specifically to Havre and Paris. The work was later translated into French by Jules Janin. (Sabin 76405). Paper. Zustand: Near fine. Handwritten Manuscript. In total, this collection includes 12 legal page leaves, written in pencil by Steinbeck on rectos only, and one typed letter from his editor. All in near fine condition, with faint toning to edges and small paperclip indentations. (Goldstone & Payne C90, article) With an 11-page typed transcription of the drafts and letters, bound in chronological order of appearance. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell case, title printed on paper label affixed to spine. (Provenance: Christie's 1986; Christie's 1999) John Steinbeck's article "Autobiography: Making of a New Yorker," begins in Part One (not included here) with his first unhappy (and short-lived) experience in New York City in 1925, at the age of 23. Part Two, handwritten here, details his second "assault on New York" in the fall of 1935, in which he begrudgingly transforms from a "Country Boy" into a true "New Yorker." At first, Steinbeck writes: "It is so strange to look back. I was going to live in New York but I was going to avoid it." Near the end of the installment, his anecdotes change. He writes: "Everything fell into place. I saw every face I passed. It was beautiful - but most important - I was part of it, I was no longer a stranger." In the final section, handwritten here, Steinbeck describes the broad dichotomy of the city, and romanticizes city life. He writes: "New York is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal, its politics are used to frighten children, its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous. But. once you have lived in New York and it has become your home - no place else is good enough. All of everything is concentrated here, population, theatre, art, painting, publishing, importing, business, murder, mugging, luxury, poverty. It is all of everything." The correspondence between Steinbeck and NYTM editor Seymour Peck primarily discusses deadlines for the article drafts. In the first letter, Steinbeck tells Peck of his plans for the three-part article. Peck responds on November 26, 1952, asking for all writing to be completed by December 24, 1952. The second letter is inserted at the end of Part Two, informing Peck that Part Three will be along shortly. The third letter, dated December 17, 1952, accompanies Part Three, in which Steinbeck says the article "isn't very good, but it is heart-felt." A truly exceptional collection of autobiographical writings from a classic American author. Despite his reputation as a Californian, John Steinbeck spent nearly half his life living in New York City. In 1925, he left Stanford University without a degree and moved to the city for roughly one year. He returned to New York with his then-girlfriend Gwen, living for a while in Sneden's Landing. They stayed in New York until the birth of his first son, Thom, and the publication of Cannery Row (1945). He later returned to the East Coast with his third wife, Elaine, and bought a home in Sag Harbor in 1955. Steinbeck remained in New York City until his death in 1968. Michaux's voyage down the Ohio River, through the Kentucky territory and his return to Charleston. Stated "first published 1955" on copyright page. Laid in bookplate from the Library of The Earl of Avon, K.G. Notes and underlining in pencil throughout, often with notes from Eden disagreeing with the author's facts and conclusions. Paired with the publisher's dust jacket, retail price on front flap, large closed tear to front cover, tape repairs to verso, bright illustrations. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Sir Anthony Eden, With the author's kindest regards. Alan Campbell-Johnson / 12th May 1955." Sir Anthony Eden (1897-1977) served as the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1955-1957, following the retirement of Winston Churchill. Before World War II, Eden served as Foreign Secretary for Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, but resigned in protest of his appeasement policy towards the Axis powers. He returned to the office of Foreign Secretary during World War II and retained that post for the remainder of the war. During his time as Prime Minister, Eden presided over the Suez Canal Crisis, which ended with the withdrawal of Western powers from the region and the eventual resignation of Eden. In 1925, the Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints opened as a special collection of the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library to provide new materials to the changing community. One year later, the personal collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg was added to the Division. Schomburg's collection included over 5,000 books; 3,000 manuscripts; 2,000 etchings and paintings; and several thousand pamphlets. While the collection was referred to as the Schomburg Collection for many years, its current name, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, was adopted in 1972. Graeme of Balyowan' and 'Mr Ja. Smyth of Aitherny'. Fair, on aged paper. A delightful poem, apparently unpublished, and a valuable piece of social history, containing a couple of manuscript emendations. A total of fourteen lines of verse, with the first ten relating to the lady's portmanteau, beginning: 'With Linen and stocking and shoes first begin / Then your night-cloaths and petticoat neatly put in / Next your Dresses compleat, for each part of the Day / With your handkerchiefs, Caps, all in Gala array / Then your Ribbons, fans, flowers & Gloves long & Short / With your combs & your brushes of every sort'. The four-line poem on the gentleman's portmanteau begins 'Coats Waiscoates [sic] and breeches short stocking & shoes / With Hankerchiefs [sic] Nightcap & Gown'.…
