Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - THE ERA OF ANTIVIRALS Introduction Although there are more than one hundred medically useful antibiotics and fungicides, there are only seven compounds licensed for use as antiviral agents, in the USA. Some of these (acyclovir and ganciclovir) are actually derivatives of each other, making the number of new discoveries even smaller. Moreover, most of these agents are of only limited therapeutic value and have substantial toxicity. It has been more than 100 years ago since Pasteur studied rabies virus (2) and Rous (4) showed that a small filterable agent (not bacteria) caused disease (sarcoma) in chickens. It was nearly 100 years ago that yellow fever virus, the first recognized human pathogenic virus, was unambiguously associated with disease (3). Enteroviruses were cultured for the first time nearly 50 years ago (1). Why then has effective chemotherapy against viruses lagged behind that of other microorganisms Viruses are often difficult to grow and image. However, with the dynamic advances in molecular biology and increased sophistication in tissue culture, the field of virology has blossomed and resulted in improved methods for detection of virus infection. The use of viruses as models of gene regulation and replication has also resulted in a massive accumulation of information.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This operations manual offers an accessible, step-by-step guide to launching, running, and achieving success with a life science and biotechnology business incubator. Written by the founder and President Emeritus of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center (PABC), one of the most successful biotech and drug discovery incubators in the United States, it is designed to introduce researchers and funders to the broad considerations and minute details of managing an incubation program. As of 2023, there are more than 1100 business incubators in the United States alone, and more than 5000 worldwide. One of the fastest-growing industries of the 'new economy,' science business incubators are a tool for regional economic stimulation and commercial development for universities and research organizations. The PABC was founded in 2006 as a state-of-the-art research facility; its purpose and operation is unusual and its success has been remarkable. It was created by the nonprofit Hepatitis BFoundation and its research arm, the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute, to help their effort to find a cure for hepatitis B. But it has proved to be more than a source of funding for those nonprofits - it has become a major economic driver for its region and Pennsylvania, creating thousands of jobs and bringing in billions of dollars to the local economy. The PABC's model has drawn attention from economists, legislators, and the research community. The strategy of bringing nonprofit research organizations and biotech startups under one roof was a founding principle, and has created powerful, lasting collaborations between scientific innovators, entrepreneurs and investors. The partnerships forged at the PABC have led to the discovery, testing, and FDA approval of new drugs for cancer and gastrointestinal diseases and medical devices, as well as multiple multimillion-dollar IPOs, and thousands of jobs. There are currently more than 50 startups housed in the Center's offices, ranging in focusfrom pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, to medical wearables and nanomedicine research.Curing Disease from the Ground Up: How to Operate a Biotechnology Business Incubator tells both a personal story about the ups and downs of leveraging a business incubator to fund and find a cure for a deadly disease, as well as providing a practical guide to running a business incubator. It is a first-hand, expert perspective for running a science business incubator, and explains how the success of the PABC can be learned and replicated. Whether it is developing a mission-focused framework, the practicalities of managing a scalable, business-savvy research nonprofit, identifying ideal tenant partners, or planning for the infrastructure needs of a large research facility, this manual is the first and last stop for entrepreneurial thinkers in this field.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. Anisko, Anna (illustrator). 2nd Edition. Pennsylvania, a state of diverse geography and geology, is rich in flora. The second edition of The Plants of Pennsylvania identifies the nearly 3,400 species of trees, wildflowers, ferns, grasses, sedges, aquatic plants, and weeds native to or naturalized in the Commonwealth. Retaining the clearly written identification keys and descriptions that made the first edition such an essential reference, this new edition has been reorganized to reflect recent advances in our understanding of plant relationships. Families and genera are listed in a sequence determined by current studies of plant molecular genetics, thus providing new insights for the study of botany. In addition, species have been added to the book as a result of new discoveries. The botanical illustrations of Anna Anisko continue to complement the descriptions and add an element of beauty to the volume. Developed in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Flora Project, and compiled by botanists at the Morris Arboretum, the official arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the second edition of The Plants of Pennsylvania is the authoritative guide to Pennsylvania's plant life. It will be indispensable to taxonomists, conservationists, ecologists, foresters, land planners, teachers, agricultural county agents, students, and amateur naturalists. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. Anisko, Anna (illustrator). 1st Edition. Black maples can tower to eighty-five feet. Artisans craft fine musical instruments from the wood of native red spruces. And in autumn, the leaves of sugar maples turn brilliant orange-gloriously coloring Penn's Woods. The naturalist, forester, or weekend observer will discover all this and more in Trees of Pennsylvania. Written by botanists at the Morris Arboretum, the official arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, this is the most comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible field and natural history guide to the state's tree life. Ann Rhoads and Timothy Block cover all of Pennsylvania's 195 trees, both native and naturalized. Each species is described in a concise, tabular format that includes the characteristics of leaves, branches, bark, flowers, and fruits. The authors discuss flowering and fruiting time, autumn leaf color, and the size of the largest specimen recorded within the state. Rhoads and Block further provide valuable historical, ecological, and economic information on each tree species, including how Pennsylvania's trees were used by Native Americans and early European settlers. This fully illustrated, user-friendly volume contains a combination of line drawings by botanical artist Anna Anisko, color photographs, range maps, and identification keys so readers will be able accurately to identify each tree species. It also offers useful information on the biology of trees, the history of Pennsylvania's many forests, and important lists of the endangered, threatened, and rare trees within the state. This is an indispensable guide for anyone interested in Pennsylvania's natural history and tree life. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. Anisko, Anna (illustrator). 1st Edition. From the Delaware River to the shores of Lake Erie, Pennsylvania's diverse watery habitats are home to more than 200 species of aquatic plants. In Aquatic Plants of Pennsylvania: A Complete Reference Guide, botanists Timothy A. Block and Ann Fowler Rhoads have assembled the first identification guide specific to the Keystone State yet useful throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Organized and written in a way that will make information easily accessible to specialists and nonspecialists alike, the book highlights the diversity and vital ecological importance of this group of plants, providing photographs, illustrations, descriptions, and identification keys for all emergent, floating-leaved, and submergent aquatic plants found in the Commonwealth. An introductory chapter on aquatic plant ecology covers topics such as the evolution, form, and reproduction of aquatic plants, vegetation zones, types of aquatic ecosystems, and rare and endangered species. Information on invasive plants, such as Eurasian water-milfoil and curly pondweed, that threaten Pennsylvania's aquatic ecosystems will be especially useful to watershed organizations, citizen monitoring projects, lake managers, and natural resource agency personnel. An illustrated identification key guides the reader through a series of steps to properly identify a specimen based on its characteristics. Each of the more than 200 listings provides a plant's taxonomy, detailed description, distribution map, and expert botanical illustrations. Many also include color photographs of the plants in their natural habitats. Signed by Illustrator(s).
