Erstausgabe
Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Cover illustration by André C. De Takacs. Folio. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making six pages. Light edgewear, and rubbing to the verso of the front cover, still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint, "When old Bill Bailey &c." Features samples of "If You Only Had My Disposition" by Chas. McCarron and Albert Von Tilzer, and "Ragging the Scale" by Ed B. Claypoole. The lyrics and title of this song reference a popular song from 1902 by Hughi Cannon called "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home?" Perhaps the gag is that he never went home and instead made his way to Hawaii where he is "known miles around" and has "turned things upside down" with his newly acquired ukulele. But things really get interesting in the second verse in which the lyrics suddenly become political, "Some Suffragettes went down, to Honolulu town/Among those gals of brown, they tried a 'Suffrage Movement'/The meetings that they held never lasted long/Old Bill Bailey broke them up when he played a song." A curious tune, but it's certainly emblematic of its time if nothing else. In fact, the ukulele was first popularized within the continental US at the PanamaPacific International Exposition held in San Francisco the same year this song was published, which may explain why ukulele is spelled incorrectly in both the title and the lyrics.

Erstausgabe
Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. Presumed first edition. Quarto. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making six pages. A tiny bit of separation at the bottom of the fold, "1921" written in ink at the top of the front cover, rubbing to the exterior, still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint, "Dapper Dan - 3." Features short samples of "Sunnyside Sal" by Kendis and Brockman, and "A Voice from Mummyland: Ilo" by Johnny S. Black. The front cover states that this song was "Featured with terrific success by Eddie Cantor in 'Midnight Rounders.'" The front cover features a black and white photographic portrait of Eddie Cantor in blackface attached to a cartoon body, an alternative cover exists in which Cantor's portrait is absent, the cartoon man has a cartoon head (a white man, not in blackface), the title font is different and reads, "Dapper Dan from Dear Old Dixie Land," and the statement about the show is absent as well, with the rest of the illustration remaining the same; both versions were published in 1921 (possibly simultaneously). *Midnight Rounders* premiered in July of 1920 and closed in November of the same year after 120 performances.
