Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2 volumes, 8vo (22.5 cm), [2], XVIII, 508 pp.; [2], XXVI, 528 pp. Publisher's cloth, covers with black frame decorations and gilt-lettered spines (bindings slightly rubbed, with some staining to the first leaf of the first volume). William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin (1824-1907), was a Scottish-Irish physicist, mathematician, and engineer, renowned for his foundational contributions to thermodynamics (including the absolute temperature scale, now known as the Kelvin scale), his work on the theory of electricity and magnetism, and his development of practical instruments such as the Kelvin compass, as well as major improvements to the Atlantic telegraph cable. "Treatise on Natural Philosophy" is a monumental nineteenth-century work of mathematical physics, written by Lord Kelvin in collaboration with the Scottish mathematical physicist Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901). Originally published in two parts between 1867 and 1883 (Part I in 1867; Part II issued in instalments and completed in 1883), the present 1894-1895 issue represents the first complete matched edition of both parts, comprising the stereotyped edition of Part I (1894) and a new edition of Part II (1895). Conceived as a comprehensive reformulation of classical physics grounded in the principles of energy, dynamics, and continuum mechanics, the Treatise played a decisive role in shaping what later came to be known as classical theoretical physics. It covers an exceptionally wide range of subjects, including kinematics, the dynamics of particles and rigid bodies, elasticity, hydrodynamics, vortex theory, and the mathematical analysis of physical forces. The work reflects Kelvin's and Tait's strong commitment to mechanical explanations of natural phenomena and their skepticism toward purely atomistic or abstract formulations, favoring instead models rooted in physical intuition and rigorous mathematics. Famously demanding--James Clerk Maxwell described it as "splendid but difficult"--the Treatise nevertheless became enormously influential and served as a standard reference for advanced students and researchers well into the early twentieth century. Today, the book is regarded as one of the great monuments of Victorian science, emblematic of the transition from Newtonian mechanics to the more abstract theoretical physics that emerged at the turn of the twentieth century, and remains of enduring importance to historians of science and collectors of classic works in physics.
