First Edition. [London: Printed by A. Strahan, 1804]. Inscribed by the Author to an Important Irish Politician and Book Collector [C] Cruise, William [1751/2-1824]. An Essay on the Law of Dignities, Or Titles of Honour. [London: Printed by A. Strahan, 1804]. 109 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary calf, rebacked retaining exi…sting spine with lettering piece, hinges reinforced. A few minor nicks to boards, corners bumped, hinges cracked, early owner bookplate (of James Correy) to front pastedown. Moderate toning to text, presentation inscription at head of title page (to "Wogan Browne, Esqr / from the Author."). $650. * First edition. According to a note on the verso of the title page, this "essay constitutes a part of an extensive work on the Laws of England respecting real property. But as the subject of it is interesting to many persons who are not of the profession, a few copies have been printed separately, that the author may be enabled to present them to his friends." One of those friends appears to have been Thomas Wogan Browne [1758?-1812], an Irish magistrate, politician and book collector. His large and well-curated private library, numbering some 6,000 volumes, was sold at auction in 1812. He and Cruise were both members of the Royal Irish Academy. The "extensive work" is Cruise's Digest of the Laws of England Respecting Real Property (first edition 1795), long a standard treatise on the subject. A second edition of The Law of Dignities was issued in 1823. The first edition is rare. OCLC locates 9 copies, 1 in the United States at Georgetown.
