Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:- This discourse is a travelogue which explores lot of avenues on Siberia. The authorÕs sole object was to sketch the splendid scenery of Siberia, without taking any artistic liberties, preferring nature in her own attractions to snatching a grace within reach of the art. Mine has been a tolerably wide field, extending from Kokhan on the west to the eastern end of the Baikal, and as far south as the Chinese town of Tchin-si, including that immense chain Syan-shan, never before seen by any European, as well as a large portion of the western part of the Gobi, over which Genghis Khan marched his wild hordes toward the west. It is a simple narrative of facts, taken from journals kept with scrupulous care during the whole journey, often under the influence of great fatigue, amid the pressure of numerous difficulties. The subject of the book is good. The illustrations require a word of explanation. These were confined to the inhabitants of Siberia. The elaboration generates a good amount of interest amongst the readers. About the Author:- Thomas Witlam Atkinson (1799Ð1861) was an English architect, artist and traveller in Siberia and Central Asia. Between 1847 and 1853 he travelled over 40,000 miles through Central Asia and Siberia, much of the time together with his wife Lucy and son Alatau, who was born during their travels. He also painted and documented his travels in two books that are today regarded as travel classics. He turned his attention to Oriental Russia, and, having received a remarkable blank passport from Nicholas I of Russia, he set out in January 1847 on the first of many journeys throughout Siberia and Central Asia. The Title 'Oriental And Western Siberia: A Narrative Of Seven Years Explorations And Adventures In Siberia, Mongolia, The Kirghis Steppes, Chinese Tartary, And Part Of Central Asia written/authored/edited by Thomas Witlam Atkinson', published in the year 2020. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-Through this present rare work, the author has tried to portray the higher interest on the subject which has induced him to attempt to produce information of a more elevated character, intended to satisfy, in some respects at least, the wishes of the Geologist, Botanist, Ethnologist, and other scientific scholars, who invariably expect to find in an account of a new country materials likely to extend their circle of their favorite study, or strengthen the truths on which it is founded. The writer took a journey through and describes the Asiatic domains of the Russian Empire. The first account of his journey was published in 1858 in "Oriental and Western Siberia: A narrative of seven years exploration." The substance of his travel and exploration in the 1850Õs on the frontiers of Russia and China that included Siberia, the river Amur, and the Lakes Balkash and Baikal: then known as the Krighis steppes. The subject matter of the book is good. It contains a map and numerous illustrations to generate more interest amongst readers and researchers. He also painted and documented his travels in two books that are today regarded as travel classics. By the time he was twenty he was a stone-carver, and in that capacity executed some good work on churches at Barnsley, Ashton-Under-Lyne and elsewhere. At the last-named town he settled for a while as a teacher of drawing. Soon after he became clerk of works to a string of important Victorian architects, including George Basevi, who designed much of Belgrave Square in London. About this time he devoted himself to the study of Gothic architecture, and in 1829 published a folio volume entitled Gothic Ornaments selected from the different Cathedrals and Churches in England.
