A collection of early anaesthetic apparatus was formed by the British instrument maker Charles King and presented to The Association of Anaesthetics of Great Britain and Ireland in 1954. Dr Bryn Thomas has used the collection as a basis for a comprehensive survey of the development of anaesthetic apparatus, from time of the first public demonstration of ether anaesthesia in 1840, to 1940. There are over 230 illustrations and each piece of apparatus is described in detail with contemporary references and biographical details of its inventor.
