In den WarenkorbAll five items are 12mo, 1 p, and in good condition, with the text entirely legible, but with slight discoloration to the extremities and to the blank second leaves of four of the letters. Letter One (17 May 1898): Concerns a letter by Sir William White, regarding which Knowles has not written as 'it seemed to me there was nothing to write about - & I am compelled to write so many letters!' Knowles 'did not at all think that Sir W. White intended any disparaging reflection in your competence by saying that you were not a man "technically trained in naval architecture" '. He is glad that Hurd is now 'convinced to the same effect'. Letter Two (28 Feb. 1900): He will 'give immediate & favourable consideration to the article' suggested by Hurd, 'if type written', 'the sooner the better in view of the great crush of contributions bearing on the War & our Defences against all that it may lead to'. Letter Three (9 March 1900): Knowles has read Hurd's article on 'belated War Ships', and finds it 'rather too full of detail to be suitable for theh General Public to which my Review goes'. It is, he feels, 'more fitted for a service journal'. Letter Four (22 March 1900): Hurd has sent back the article on 'Belated British War Ships', but the changes he has made do not change Knowles's view 'that the article is not quite what I should wish at this juncture'. Letter Five (2 October 1901): He would have written sooner, but has only just returned 'from my Seven Weeks' "exile" - in the shape of an autumn holiday'. He will gladly accept Hurd's article on 'Naval fashions' for publication in November, 'But pardon me if I ask you not to be publishing any articles in our own name in any November periodicals - It is in an author's interest as well as an Editor's not to make himself too frequent - as some men seem unable to prevent making themselves'. Hurd was editor of the Naval and Military Record, 1896-1899, was with the Daily Telegraph, 1899-1928, and was joint editor of Brassey's Naval Shipping Annual, 1921-1928.

This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist. His collection recently came to auction near Washington DC, as we were fortunate to purchase a portion of it, which we're proud to offer here. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although they sometimes get right). Oversized and overweight books will require extra shipping for safe delivery. This copy does not have Lovejoy's name in it, but we provide a card with provenance for purchaser. Signed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbEarly Admiralty Charts of the South American Coast Quarto (335 by 330mm). 17 engraved charts, of which seven are double-page and two folding, printed list of maps to front pastedown, chart 8 'Plan of the Channel formed by the English & Archimedes.', added in manuscript to list, some light spotting and dampstaining, half calf over marbled paper boards, rebacked and recornered. Collection of maritime charts of South America by the Hydrographical Office of the Admiralty under the supervision of Captain Thomas Hurd (c.1757-1823). The earliest charts dated 1807 and 1808, (chart 9 'Sketch of the Entrance of Monte Video', and chart 10 'Plan of the Port and Portuguese Fort of Colonia del Sacramento'), were published under the supervision of Alexander Dalrymple whilst he was Hydrographer to the Admiralty. In 1808, Dalrymple was succeeded by Captain Thomas Hurd. "During his appointment, there was a significant increase in the number of charts engraved and issued to the navy. He was also able to organize a regular system of surveys under his control by specialist naval officers in command of ships specially allocated for their use. In 1821, he persuaded theAdmiraltyto placeAdmiraltycharts on sale to the public so that they could be used by ships of the mercantile marine. At the time of his death, probably in London, on 29 April 1823Hurdwas also superintendent of chronometers and a commissioner for the discovery of longitude" (Andrew C.F. David for DNB). The printed contents list to the front pastedown suggests these charts were published as a collected volume, this is reinforced by the fact that the list is labelled "Vol. I", although no record remains of its publication or publication of further volumes. Chart '8' 'Plan of the Channel formed by the English and Archimedes Banks' has been added in manuscript by a contemporary hand, as have the chart numbers. We are unable to trace another example of this collection of charts to have come up at auction since the Second World War. Although individual charts are held at the British Library, we are unaware of any institutional examples of this collection. 1. Bookplate of G. and N. Ingleton.
