Verlag: Worcester, Massachusetts. by Isaiah Thomas. 1793., 1793
Anbieter: Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA, USA
Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. INCOMPLETE COPY OF THE EXTREMELY RARE: Octavo edition of Isaiah Thomas's Bible. Bound in full leather, an early binding. The first page present is page 17, which is in the middle of Genesis XIV. Frontismatter and the first 8 numbered leaves missing. The rest of the Old Testament is complete, pages 17-735. The bottom of page 735 has publishers imprint, "Printed at Worcester, Massachusetts, by Isaiah Thomas, MDCCXCIII." Table of weights and measures is on the back of page 735. The Apocrypha (unpaginated) is bound in after the Old Testament. Unpaginated: 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, Esther (ends with chapter XV, incomplete) After the incomplete Apocrypha, there is a crack in the binding on the inside with the inside of the leather spine visible in the gap where the rest of the Apocrypha should be. The next page present is: The New Testament: The Gospel, according to Saint Matthew. (no title page present for the New Testament). First page of Matthew is not paginated, but the verso is numbered 740. Pagination continues to 956 and ends at the very start of Revelations XIX (so revelations 20, 21, 22 are missing; approx. 3-4 pages). Leather binding with maroon label on the spine stamped in gold, "Holy Bible." Evans 25172 Hills 44 Early American Bibles are scarce. Isaiah Thomas of Worcester, Mass, printed Bibles in Folio, Octavo, and Quarto sizes in the 1790's. This is the first printing of the octavo bible, measures 5.25 inches x 8.75 inches. The pages have been trimmed quite close to the text, especially in the New Testament, but all the text is present. As you can see in the photos, the pages are toned from age, sometimes significantly, with also some occasional foxing. Some indistinct writing on the inside covers, but it doesn't appear to be names or dates and I can't quite make it out. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.
