He was awarded the first Adult Education Imperial Relations Trust Bur-sary to study in Australia and New Zealand and has also been awarded a Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the first to an adult educator. He is past Chairman of the Standing conference on Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Universities Council for Adult and Continuing Education. Dr Barry Elsey entered adult education as a mature student after leaving school without any qualifications. First by part-time and then full-time study, he went on to university. He entered university adult education as a research fellow and then to a lectureship at the Universities of Liver-pool and Nottingham. He has wide experience of university extension work and professional train-ing programmes in adult education.
