Nineteen parts bound in four volumes, 8vo, engraved portrait frontispiece and pp. 159, [3]; 139, [3]; 160, [2]; 157, [3] 172, [3]; 171, [4]; 171, [3]; 156, [3]; 155, [3]; 145, [3], 135, [3]; 172, [4]; 175, [3]; 188, [4]; 166, [2]; 189, [3]; 180, [3]; 170, [2]; 169, [3]; the first nine parts (vols 1-2) being second edition, the last ten (vols 3-4) apparently first, although all are designated 'Cabinets-Ausgabe'; uniform in (original?) grey horizontal-ribbed cloth, spines lettered and decorated in gilt. An early edition in German of Macaulay's great History of England, which became the great exemplar for 19th century historians. Macaulay never came close to finishing his grand design, and by the time the last sections were published in 1855 he had only reached 1697. This copy has the work complete. This translation is not in the British Library: they have what appears to be a complete translation by Friedrich Bülau (Leipzig, 1850-56) in ten parts; and another (Braunschweig, 1862-3) by W. Beseler and T. Stromberg; NUC has an earlier edition of the first parts, but no edition of this translation.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). Lord Macaulay's famous historical work. The popular edition, complete in two volumes. This work is famed for its well written prose and its confident emphasis on a progressive model of British history. It is quite the Whig interpretation of history. The work covers from 1685-1702 and encompasses the reigns of James II, the Glorious Revolution, the co-regency of William and Mary until William III's death. In uniform half calf bindings. Rebacked, with original boards and backstrips preserved. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the spines and some loss to the original backstrip at spine labels. Further patches of light rubbing to the extremities and to the paper covered boards. Evidence of a sticker being removed to the front board of volume II. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, dated 1894. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper, Mudie. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are age toned. The odd spots throughout. Very Good. book.
