He asks him to accept 'the accompanying volume', which he ordered to be bound for him 'weeks ago but it has only turned up this morning'. He is 'delighted to know that Pinero's brilliant play seems to he having the great success it deserves'. (Pinero's farce 'Preserving Mr Panmure' ran for 99 nights from 19 January 1911 at the Comedy Theatre.) Guthrie's 1885 novella 'The Tinted Venus' served as the basis of the 1943 Broadway musical 'One Touch of Venus', with music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Ogden Nash, and book by S. J. Perelman and Nash, which was made into a 1948 Hollywood film starring Ava Gardner and Robert Walker.

One of its author's more serious works, this novel concerns a struggling author who passes off a more successful friend's manuscript as his own. Ironically, Anstey was accused of plagiarising Follett Synge's book Tom Singleton.

See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. In good condition, on the first leaf of bifolium. (There are extensive pencil annotations in a later hand on the second leaf.) Very neatly written. Addressed to 'J. G. Wilson Esqre.' and signed 'Anstey Guthrie'. He has 'much pleasure' in answering Wilson's question. ''Shut Out' is a short story of mine which was published in Longmans Magazine about 1895 or 6, afterwards included in a volume of short stories under the title of "The Talking Horse". I think published by Messrs. Smith & Elder - but now long out of print. "The Talking Horse" is included in "Humour & Fantasy", but not "Shut Out".' See Image.

He 'can only say that your list seems to me as representative as any that could be drawn up', and that he does not 'feel in a position to offer any criticism upon it'. The edited version of Anstey's letter appeared with others in 'The Academy' in November 1897, in a piece with the opening sentence: 'We have received a large correspondence in response to our request for comment on the list of suggested members for an ACADEMY OF LETTERS published last week.'.

But, if she sends it along, he will write his name in it "with pleasure " The "Dear Madam" he addresses was the 15-year-old daughter of a retired licensed victualler, younger sister of the actress Maud Gill (1883-1950), who began her career with Herbert Beerbohm Tree and made her name playing Thirza Tapper in Eden Phillpotts The Farmer's Wife (1916, taking the same role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1928 film). Mabel Hill (1887-1987) married in 1917 John Goss, a musician, and lived to be 100. F. Anstey (né Thomas Anstey Guthrie, 1855 1934) became famous overnight with his first novel, Vice Versa (1882), from reading which Anthony Trollope is said to have died laughing. The play he was rehearsing was Lyre and Lancet at the Royalty Theatre, a dramatisation with Kinsey Peile of Anstey's 1895 novel; it bankrupted the producer, C.B. Cochran. Inscribed by Author(s).

The recipient is the novelist George Meredith's daughter Marie Eveleen (Mariette; 1871-1933), wife of Henry Parkman Sturgis (1847-1929), American-born banker and Liberal politician. 1p, 16mo. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight spotting from blotting at the head of the page, and minor traces of glue from mount at corners of the blank reverse. Folded once for postage. Addressed to 'Dear Miss Meredith' and signed 'Anstey Guthrie'. After explaining that the delay in responding is due to his having been in Kent, he explains that due to an engagement the following evening he 'cannot have the pleasure of coming to Box Hill & dining with Mr. Meredith'. He ends 'With many regrets & kind regards to you & Mr. Meredith'. Note: Extracted from an Album of Autograph Letters created by Meredith's daughter which included letters to George Meredith from distinguished fellow-writers such as Henry James, George Eliot but also from people of distinction to other correspondents (such as Wellington and Clemenceau).
