On a sandy beach of the Dutch North Sea coast an experiment was carried out with 24000 brightly coloured artificial shell valves of Donax vittatus. Unperforated and perforated (artificial Natica-holes of 1, 2 or 3 mm inner diameter) left and right valves of three sizes (19.7, 24.2, and 28.7 mm shell-length) were used. It appeared that under the influence of waves and water currents a clear selection occurred according to size ("size effect"), symmetry ("left-right phenomenon"), presence or absence of a hole ("hole effect"), and diameter of the hole ("diameter effect"). The implication of these observations for studies of the biology of Naticid snails based upon valves collected along the beach are discussed. Furthermore, some remarks are made on the implications of this type of experimental work for sedimentology and marine palaeontology in general. 35 pp., 12 figs, gr. 8.

It should, therefore, not only be considered as a work in progress exhibition which succeeded the former activities within the E. C. (Inventory on Tissue Characterization in Europe and first Workshop). The Steering Group invited a 1 imited group of Institutes to send its group leader and a research fel low in the entitled field, who should expose the overall research program, as wei 1 as the more specific work on tissue characterization by RF signal analysis and spectroscopy. The ultimate goal of the Workshop has been the formulation of schemes of interaction among the Institutes and individuals and the definition of cooperative research programs. The remainder of the groups and some of the groups present are working in the field of analysis and processing of cl inical A- and B-mode echograms (i. e. video signals). Because this work is more closely related to the cl inical diagnostics it was decided that for that reason no preparatory workshop was needed. In the final proposal for the Concerted Action this work wi 1 1 get ample attention. Although not many clinicians were present, their positive interest in the sophisticated analysis techniques and their contribution to the dis cussions again have been a most valuable and stimulating experience.

J. Dijksterhuis have labeled the 'mechanization of the world picture. ' Funding for the conference was provided by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, which honored our proposal for an Academy Colloquium. We should also like to thank Ap de Wit, Martine Wagenaar, and Ine van den Heuvel from the Royal Academy for the careful and reliable administrative organization of the colloquium. Through a generous grant (no. 200-22-295), the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research ( NWO) allowed the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Natural Philosophy at Nijmegen University to act as the colloquium's second sponsor. All papers that were read at the colloquium have been strongly modified for publication. It is hoped that the resulting articles display even more coherence and unity than the colloquium did, while at the same time retaining something of its spirit and diversity.
