During Wwii, He Was Involved In The Manhattan Project, Which Ultimately Led To The Successful Development Of The First Atomic Bomb In America. Later On, Under The Pressure Of Deportation For Suspicions Of Association With Communists, He Would Eventually Return To China, Where He Would Make Important Contributions To China's Missile And Space Program. During The Second Red Scare, In The 1950S, The Us Federal Government Accused Him Of Communist Sympathies. In 1950, Despite Protests By His Colleagues, He Was Stripped Of His Security Clearance. He Decided To Return To China, But He Was Detained At Terminal Island, Near Los Angeles. After Spending Five Years Under House Arrest, He Was Released In 1955 In Exchange For The Repatriation Of American Pilots Who Had Been Captured During The Korean War. He Left The United States In September 1955 On The American President Lines Passenger Liner Ss President Cleveland, Arriving In China Via Hong Kong. Millikan And Von Karman Are Among The Most Famous American Aeronautical Engineers. Tung Hua Lin (1911 - 2007) Was A Chinese-American Aerospace And Structural Engineer Best Known For Designing China's First Twin Engine Aircraft During World War Ii. Lin Was Born In Chungking In May 1911. His Grandfather Was Head Of The Local Telegraph Agency. In 1914, His Family Moved To Beijing. He Enrolled In Huiwen High School In 1924, Graduating In 1928. After Graduation, He Entered Yenching University, Majoring In Physics, But The Following Year Transferred To Chiaotung University's Tangshan, Hebei Campus (Present-Day Southwest Jiaotong University), Graduating With A Bachelor Of Science Degree In 1933. He Then Won A Chinese National Fellowship To Study In The United States In 1933. He Completed His Master Of Science Degree At The Massachusetts Institute Of Technology In 1936. He Returned To Teach At Tsing Hua University In 1937. Lin Was Asked To Design Aircraft During World War Ii. His Production Team Worked In A Cave To Protect Against Bombing By The Japanese. He Lacked Modern Design Tools Such As Wind Tunnels To Test The Aircraft. The C-0101 Which He Designed And Constructed, Largely From Bamboo And Wood, Was Test Flown From Chungking To Chengdu On November 18, 1944. Lin Was Awarded A Medal By The Chinese Government For His Efforts. After The War, Lin Was A Member Of A Mission To Design Jet Aircraft In China. They Approached The St. Louis, Missouri-Based Mcdonnell Aircraft About Mass-Producing Their Aircraft, But As The Price Quoted Was Too Expensive, They Instead Chose Gloucester, England's Gloster Aircraft Company; Lin Was Part Of A 20-Person Design Team Who Moved To England To Work With Them In 1947. However, Due To A Lack Of Funding, They Had To Halt Production In 1949, Whereupon Lin Moved To The United States. There, He Taught At The University Of Detroit While Studying For His Doctorate At The University Of Michigan. He Became A Professor At The University Of California, Los Angeles In 1955; While There, He Published The Theory Of Inelastic Structure In 1968. Lin Was Awarded The Theodore Von Kármán Medal By The American Society Of Civil Engineers In 1988. His Research On Earthquake Stress In Construction Materials Led To A Fellowship In The National Academy Of Engineering In 1990. Taiwan's Academia Sinica Named Him As A Member In 1996. His Cousin Tung-Yen Lin Was Also One Of The Outstanding Structural Engineers Of The 20Th Century.

Space Program, Through His Founding Role In The Galcit Rocket Research Program, Working With Theodore Von Karman And A Small Group Of Cal Tech Students And Others. This Early Paper Discusses Constant Pressure Motors Which Include Either Gas, Liquid, Or Solid Propellants (As Opposed To Constant Volume Solid Pellet Motors), And Is Of Importance As Later That Year Malina Is Credited With A Major Role In The Development Of Solid-Fuel Motor Fuel Together Several Of His Co-Workers And Von Karman, Was The First Or Second Director Of Jpl, And Later Started A New Career As An Avant-Garde Artist And Founder Of The Original Journal Of Arts And Sciences "Leonardo". Ownership Signature Of Mark Serrurier (1904 - 1988), Ehe Son Of Dutch-Born Electrical Engineer, Iwan Serrurier, Who Created The Moviola In 1924 Which Became The Technology Used For Film Editing. Mark Was A Graduate Of Caltech And Went On To Work On Designs For The Mt. Palomar 200 Inch (5 M) Hale Telescope. The Pioneering Truss Design He Invented For That Instrument's Massive Tube Structure (The "Serrurier Truss") Is Still Used Today In Large Telescope Designs. During World War Ii, Mark Worked At The Jet Propulsion Laboratory Testing Jet Aircraft Engines. In 1942, Rolf Sabersky Worked In Mechanical Design On The Southern California Cooperative Wind Tunnel Under Serrurier And Hap Richards. After The War In 1946 Mark Took Over As President Of Moviola Co., His Father Iwan'S Company. Mark Re-Designed His Fathers Invention With Many Improvements And Ran The Company Until He Sold It In 1966. In 1979, Mark Accepted A Special Academy Award For Technical Achievement" For The Progressive Development Of The Moviola From The 1924 Invention Of His Father, Iwan Serrurier, To The Present Series 20 Sophisticated Film Editing Equipment". He Only Accepted After Insisting That His Late Father's Name Would Also Appear On The Statue. This Offprint- As Most Early "Arroyo Seco Group" Rocket Material- Is Quite Scarce.
