2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Eighteen lines closely and neatly written, headed 'To the Council of Bath College'. An approving testimonial: 'The Revd. Robert Hutchison, who is a candidate for the Head mastership of Bath College, was my pupil during his residence as an Undergraduate at Exeter College Oxford, and I have much pleasure in certifying to the high charater he bore for industry and good behaviour during that period. He was Scholar of the College, and his scholarship was good and sound, as he proved by getting a First Class in Moderations. As I was one of the examiners on that occasion, I can add that his position in that class was decidedly a good one.'.…

For information on Cook see his biography in the Oxford DNB, which points out that the subtlety of his later fiction was lost on his contemporaries, being written in a style that 'was not sufficiently sensational' for the period. The present item is the complete text of the last thing Cook ever wrote: a story which appeared in the weeks following his death, in Hood's Comic Annual for 1884 (London, 1883). On 3 November 1883, the 'Bookseller' quoted the review of the volume in the magazine 'Fun': 'a melancholy interest attaches to the article "Columbines all of a Row," from the fact that it was the last production of the late Mr. Dutton Cook, having been completed only a few days before his death'. The Graphic praised the story's 'charming intermingling of pathos and humour'. 12pp, landscape 12mo. The holograph is written in a close, stylized hand, in purple ink, on twelve 11.5 x 18 cm leaves attached with a brass stud. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed in autograph at top-right of first page: 'Dutton Cook / 69 Gloucester Crescent. N.W', and signed at end 'Dutton Cook'. With autograph emendations throughout, but evidently a final draft: the tenth and eleventh leaves have both been divided into two parts with neat vertical cutting, and reunited on the reverse with paper labels, with the section created by this division indicated by numbering in another hand in pencil in the margins. The story is divided by Cook into nine parts with roman numerals.…

Cobb's letter is 1p., 4to, typed in green. He states that he is 'collecting the autographs of prominent American editors' and that he would like to add Halstead's, as 'it will not be complete without yours'. At the foot of the letter Halstead has written, in a sprawling hand, with smudged signature, 'Perhaps the will serve. | M. Halstead'. Pinned to the letter is the calling card of 'Mr. Murat Halstead.', with his signature 'M. Halstead' (again slightly smudged) beneath the name. Both items are lightly-aged, but good. Accompanying the letter is an engraving of Halstead by Arthur Jule Goodman, 1890. It is in good condition, neatly attached to a paper mount. …

4pp., 4to. On two loose leaves of Whatman paper, each watermarked 1827. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. The document begins with the following note, dated and signed by Roby: 'The following ballad from my forthcoming "Traditions of Lancashire," though not of much value in itself, may yet acquire some, from its connexion with, and introduction into Mrs. Thelwall's elegant volume of Scraps.' (The implication that the two leaves have been removed from Mrs Thelwall's album is supported by pagination from 12 to 15.) Sixty-four lines, divided into sixteen four-line stanzas. This version only differs in one instance from that published two years later in Roby's 'Traditions of Lancashire': the fifty-seventh line in the published version - 'The moon looks bright on Rudolph's towers,' reads, in this version, 'The moon looks bright o'er Speke's grey towers,'. The recipient is more likely to be the wife of John Thelwall, than that of his son Algernon Sydney Thelwall, Georgiana Ann (née Tahourdin).…
