The first series of a two-volume work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the front board and spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 107 further illustrations by George Cruikshank or Cruickshank (1792-1878), a renowned British caricaturist and book illustrator, whose illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. The First Series (1835-1843) of the two-volume Comic Almanack, comprising humorous short stories, songs and poetry, by William Makepeace Thackeray, Albert Smith, Gilbert a Beckett, and the Brothers Mayhew. Undated, dated using the 32-page catalogue of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart, though darkened to the spine with shelf wear to the joints and extremities. Small tears to the cloth to the head and tail of the spine. Gilt is slightly faded. Binding is slightly strained to page 33 and the frontispiece is coming loose; otherwise, internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

In near fine condition. Praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his lifetime, British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank illustrated numerous works for close friend Charles Dickens including Sketches by Boz (1836), The Mudfog Papers (1837â "38) and Oliver Twist (1838). The Comic Almanacks of George Cruikshank have long been regarded by admirers of the inimitable artist as among his finest, most characteristic productions. Extending over a period of nineteen years, from 1835 to 1853, inclusive, they embrace the best period of his artistic career, and show the varied excellences of his marvelous power.
