Er war für die literarische Restaurationszeit eine Sensation und fand überall viele Bewunderer und Widersacher. Die Zeitgenossen schätzten die Jungdeutschen aber nicht nur als Meister des Stils. Ihre Aufmerksamkeit galt auch seiner epochemachenden Novität. Angesichts des starken Echos, das der Stil der Jungdeutschen bei den Zeitgenossen fand, ist es recht merkwürdig, daß die Forschung nur beschränktes Interesse dafür aufgebracht hat. Es gibt noch keine umfassende Untersuchung, die sich dieser Thematik mit so großem Interesse und aktuellem Problembewußtsein zugewendet hat, wie es bei den damaligen Kritikern anzutreffen war. In der vorliegenden Arbeit präsentiert der japanische Germanist Takanori Teraoka die Jungdeutschen als Schriftsteller, die sich durch dauerndes Experimentieren um eine Erneuerung des Stils bemühten.
