In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1930. First edition. 491pp., a frontispiece and 7 other black and white plates, 2 figures in the text and 3 maps. The "Worcester" was a merchant ship which was plying its trade between London and India in a commercial operation which the English merchants were determined to keep exclusively their own to the total exclusion of their neighbours the Scots, operating out of Edinburgh. In 1707, Queen Anne of Scotland and of England gave Royal Assent to the settlement and the Union of Scotland and England now to be called together Great Britain. The Scots were then allowed to join the East India trading routes previously monopolised by the English. After trade in India the Worcester was returning home and stopped in South Africa for provisions. The skipper, Thomas Green, was warned against sailing up the Channel because of French pirate activity and advised to take the longer but safer route back to London by sailing up the west coast of England and over the north of Scotland and down through the North Sea back to London. Green followed that advice and as he approached the Scottish east coast he chose to anchor at Leith as the weather ahead seemed too stormy to risk until the rough winds and waves abated. In August 1704, the Worcester was seized by agents of Roderick Mackenzie, company secretary of the Scottish "Darien Company" with a warrant from the Scottish courts. The crew were all arrested and brought ashore. Mackenzie had created a story that the Worcester was itself a pirate ship and had attacked and plundered Scottish commercial interests and had captured and killed a Scottish sea-captain called Drummond. A legal charade began which would end with the hanging of Thomas Green and his Mate John Madder and Gunner Simpson on April 11, 1705, after a trial and appeal and attempts by privy councillors in London to intercede. Then the contents of the Worcester were sold and distributed to the creditors' of the Darien Company with particularly favourable portions for Mackenzie. Witnesses who were bought and brought to give their evidence were later found either dead or disappeared. This book is a study of the seizure at Leith of the Worcester, the hanging of her Captain, and the ensuing controversy. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and small black publisher's emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and the spine is faded. The spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
