Archive of ten autograph letters signed, three autograph addressed envelopes, and associated correspondence to the Rev. H. R. Haweis, spanning Temple's episcopate as Bishop of London and later tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury,…1896-1902. Comprising ten autograph letters signed ("F. London" and later "F. Cantuar"), mostly on Fulham Palace headed paper, with examples from Lambeth Palace and the Old Palace, Canterbury; together with three autograph addressed envelopes in Temple's hand, a five-page typed copy letter from Haweis to Temple, Haweis's five-page autograph draft of the same, and a further autograph covering letter. Letters approximately 115 x 180 mm, the typed memorandum approximately 210 x 260 mm. Horizontal folds as issued, otherwise very good throughout. A large archive documenting a long-running correspondence between Frederick Temple, one of the most influential churchmen of the Victorian era, and the celebrated preacher, lecturer and author the Rev. Hugh Reginald Haweis (1838-1901). The letters principally concern questions of ecclesiastical authority, preaching engagements and church administration. Among the subjects is the controversy surrounding Haweis's Sunday lectures and conferences at Ramsgate and Margate. The archive includes Haweis's substantial five-page autograph draft and matching typed copy letter defending his position. Signed by Author(s).
