Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Harry Downing Temple and Floyd Richard Vranian (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. [8], 80 pages. Illustrations (color). Decorative cover. Cover has slight wear and some sticker residue. Harry Downing Temple attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute as a member of the Corps of Cadets from 1930 to 1934, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering. Colonel Temple was a veteran of the United States Army and Civilian Conversation Corps. During the Second World War, he served in the Corps of Engineers. He took part in the Normandy Invasion. He also served during the Korean War. As Commanding Officer of The Institute of Heraldry, he designed coats of arms, seals, and banners for thirty-two Episcopal cathedrals and personally designed the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He served as a professional officer of the U.S. Army and participated in World War II and the Korean War, rising to the rank of Colonel. From 1961 to 1966 he headed the Army's Institute of Heraldry, and designed the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He retired from the Army in 1966. Temple began his research for a book about the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets in the mid- 1970s, and retired to Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1988 to be closer to the archival materials necessary for his research. Dick Vranian died before the last four paintings in the series were completed. Consequently they were completed by other artists.

According to her entry in the Oxford DNB, Eliza Lynn Linton moved to Malvern in 1895. (See also Temple's Oxford DNB entry.) 4pp, 16mo. Bifolium. Sixty-six lines of closely-written text. The two leaves of the bifolium have been separated, and re-attached with archival tape; resulting in slight loss to some text on the third page, otherwise in fair condition, lightly aged. Folded once. Signed '(Mrs.) E. Lynn Linton'. While he may not recall that she had the honour of being introduced to him by 'Mr. Gedge' in the House of Commons, she does, and she is writing to ask if he has 'any offices to give to a man you know, & one of whom we English may be justly proud - Henry Acworth, the Municipal Commissioner of Bombay & the founder of the Matunga Asylum for Lepers - the Translator of the Ballads of the Marathas & one of the cream of the Indian Civil Service'. After pointing out Temple's acquaintance with the Acworths, she explains that Acworth has now settled at Malvern Wells, and is 'far too vigorous & strong a man to be unemployed'. He would be angry if he knew she was writing to Temple, but she does not like 'to see such fine qualities as his lying waste'. She continues in praise of Acworth, before exclaiming, 'What stirring times these are! - I have the feeling of holding my breath in anticipation -'.
