Berieben und bestossen, papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Field investigations and bibliographical research into the little-known but important Salmas earthquake in Northwest Azarbaijan (Iran) provided the following results. The morning before the earthquake, a foreshock (Mb 5.4) centered, as the main shock, in the Salmas Plain, killed about 25 people and incited a great part of the population to spend the following night out of doors. The main shock (Mb = 7.3) occurred the following night, on 6 May 1930 at 22h34m27s GMT and destroyed about 60 villages and 40 churches, killing about 2514 people, both in the Salmas Plain and in the surrounding mountains. Its macroseismic epicentre was at approximately 3S.15N 44.70E. The main shock was associated with 2 surface faults, with a maximum horizontal displacement of 4 m and vertical displacement of over 5 m; the combined action of these faults was a relative lowering, and a displacement to the east, of the Salmas Plain. Two days later, the strongest aftershock destroyed one village at the northern edge of the Salmas Plain. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

The Belus is a very coherent region only known to its inhabitants stretching along the different Mounts Sima'an, Halaqa, Bartsa, Il A'ala, Dueili, Wastani, Zawiye, Riha and Summaq. The cities that survived this appellation are Chalcis near Aleppo and the controversial Seleucia which could either be near Apamee or near Antioch-Turkey. The origin of the word Belus is in honour of Bel, the God adored on the top of the mountain overlooking Apamee. The research was done more extensively on the region of Mount Sima'an, this mountainous bloc where only two roads were manageable from Antioch to Chalcis and from Laodicia to Chalcis. On the final map of this study the Belus region is only mentioned as a "The Chalky Range". This study was the fruit of an extensive research while undertaking a restoration program of St. Simon of the Pillar between 1935 and 1944 and covers "The Chalky Range" during antiquity; its the climatic, geographical, geological, agricultural and economical conditions. This is followed by the study of the different convents of the Dama and Quatura plains, especially Mar Sima'an, and the villages in the mountainous range such as Bamuqqa, Qirqbize and Bekyo. It concludes with the study of this rural civilisation with its height and downfall. #34324.

Within archaeology, the historiography of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, and historical geography, this work is considered an absolute milestone. The book is the first systematic, in-depth study of what we now call the "Dead Cities" (or the Dendrophoria) of Northern Syria. This is an area containing hundreds of exceptionally well-preserved early Christian and Roman villages. Thanks to the dry climate and early abandonment, houses, churches, and olive presses often remained standing up to the roofline. Tchalenko mapped this unique heritage in detail for the first time. Tchalenko introduced the theory that this region was entirely specialized in monoculture: the production and export of olive oil to the entire Roman Empire (particularly via the port of Antioch). Although later historians (such as Georges Tate in the 1990s) have somewhat nuanced this theory by demonstrating that the economy was more diverse, Tchalenko's data and his focus on agricultural archaeology remain the basis for all discussions on this subject. The work contains hundreds of detailed architectural drawings, floor plans, and photographs from the first half of the 20th century. Given the tragic destruction and looting during the Syrian civil war (the area is now on the UNESCO list of endangered World Heritage Sites), Tchalenko's documentation is more important and relevant today than ever for reconstruction and preservation.
