Beadle and Tatum won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Joshua Lederberg for their discovery that genes act by regulating definite chemical events. Beadle and Tatum are the fathers of modern genetics, and their work with Neurospora had tremendous importance for 20th century studies of heredity. It was their work on the Neurospora strain that led to their winning the Nobel Prize. Ryan was a pioneer geneticist who initially taught Lederberg at Columbia. Ryan is a significant figure in the early history of genetics, who worked extensively with Beadle & Tatum, and produced vital contributions to the field of cell genetics and the study of mutants.

It was this work on the Neurospora strain that led to their winning the Nobel Prize, and this article represents a key part of their joint studies. 8vo. 27-35 pp. Printed wrappers. Ownership signature of Norman Horowitz. Fine. RARE. EARLY GENETICS PAPERS BY NOBEL PRIZE WINNER. Important group of papers ranging through the whole career of Tatum, and including such co-authors as: George W. Beadle & Joshua Lederberg (both Nobel Laureates), David M. Bonner, & A. C. Giese. Tatum was one of the fathers of modern genetics and worked extensively with Beadle on drosophila and Neurospora. This work culminated in the 1958 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine, which Tatum shared with Beadle and Joshua Lederberg. Horowitz, whose name or rubber stamp appear on all of the papers, was a colleague of Beadle and Tatum, and an early pioneer of genetics. Wasson, Nobel Prize Winners. WITH: TATUM, & BEADLE. 4to. 1 p. Gedr. Briefkopf The Rockefeller Institute". An Robert Ancell: It is difficult to answer in any very meaningful way the question asked in your letter of January 22. About all I can say is that undoubtedly both heredity and environment played some part in my going into science. My father was a research scientist and teacher, and I was raised in this atmosphere. Another significant factor during college and graduate work was undoubtedly my exposure to Professors E. B. Fred and W. H. Peterson at the University of Wisconsin.
