Principally known as the main protagonist of the Constructivist movement in the 1920s, Russian artist Naum Gabo (1890 - 1977) created some of the most inspirational sculptures of the twentieth-century. His constructions, ranging from the early figurative Head No.2, to his large public kinetic sculpture commissions, embodied the modernist preoccupations of art in relation to science, architecture and philosophy, and made him one of the leading figures of the Russian avant-garde. After studying engineering in Munich, Gabo moved back to Russia in 1917, and there developed the theories and practice of Constructivism, a term he coined with his brother in their 'Realistic Manifesto' of 1920 which promoted art as a part of man's everyday existence without the confinement of artistic terms and convention. Gabo traveled extensively to the hubs of modernism in Europe, spending time with the de Stijl and teaching at the Bauhaus, and in Paris in the wake of Nazi occupation to join Mondrian's Abstraction-Creation group. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he moved to Cornwall, where his influence on the St Ives group can be seen in the work of BarbaraHepworth and Peter Lanyon, amongst others. He later emigrated to the United States. Gabo's work is most admired for its rigorous enquiries into ways of representing mass, volume and space. His sensitive and imaginative use of materials, ranging from fishing line, to Perspex, to wood, created a rhythm and balance within his sculptures evoking intense emotional responses. A new dedicated monograph on this truly original artist is long overdue, and this accessible and comprehensive book is the ideal guide to Gabo's life and work. Containing over 140 colour illustrations, including photographs from private archives and the artist's family collections, "Naum Gabo" will introduce a new audience to the achievements of one of the twentieth-century's most unsung artistic masters. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Lieko Shiga makes intimate portraits, set among mystical landscapes and interiors, integrating her personal experiences with grander mythologies into surreal and fantastical images. Without using digital retouching, she evokes the twilight zone between dream and reality. This volume focuses on her series RASEN KAIGAN (Spiral Coast) 200812, photographs of the village of Kitakama in Japan before and after the devastating 2011 tsunami, capturing the spirit and history of the place and its people. Shiga's work is represented in museum collections around the world. In 2012, she won the Higashikawa Prize for new artists, and in 2021 she received the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award. The Tate Photography Series is a celebration of photography by artists in the Tate collection, presenting some of the most significant photographers in the world today. Each book focuses on an individual photographer and includes a specially selected sequence of images and an introduction by a Tate curator, alongside a conversation about each photographer's practice. The unifying theme for Series Two is Ecology and Environment, featuring photographers who examine aspects of our relationship with the natural world, environment and changing climate. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Summary:In exploring the intersection of art, politics and society, few collections in the world can compare with the David King collection. David King (1943-2016) was not only a passionate collector, but also an artist, designer and historian. Over a lifetime he amassed one of the world's largest collections of Soviet political art and photographs. Every step of the Soviet journey is documented in visual media, photomontage, photographs, paintings, handwritten notes, books (signed with annotations and marginalia), enclosures and ephemera. The collection is also unique in examples of image manipulation techniques, erasures and deletions, and in the survival, despite the purges, of extremely rare books and manuscripts by the early revolutionaries who died in the Show Trials of 1936-38. Exhibition: Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom (08.11.2017 - 18.02.2018).
