The fundamental rules of computer networks are the protocols. 'A protocol is a set of rules that governs the operation of functional units to achieve communication' [STA-86}. The book follows a practical approach to protocol speci fication and testing, but at the same time it introduces clearly and precisely the relevant theoretical fundamentals. The principal objectives of this work are: to familiarize readers with communication protocols, to present the main, formal description techniques, to apply various formal description techniques to protocol specification and testing. This book tackles that problem by surveying data and theories coming from various fields such as evolutionary biology, psychology, neurology and philosophy, and fitting them into a coherent, new theoretical framework of a broadly anti-representationalist ilk. In order to construct the framework, the authors introduce a series of new notions, reshape or interpret many already in currency (such as affordances, categories, misrepresentation, conceptual and non-conceptual content, aspect seeing, the analog-digital distinction and the evolutionary adaptivity of art), and formulate five criteria on the basis of which what is and what is not mentally represented can clearly be told apart. Die gebürtige Wienerin absolvierte erst ein Studium der Kunstgeschichte, um sich dann der künstlerischen Weiterbildung in Florenz und Berlin zu widmen. Dort schloß sie sich dem Kreis um H. Zille (1858-1929) und K. Kollwitz (1867-1945) an, die sie entscheidend beeinflussen sollten. Der ausbleibende Erfolg in Deutschland zwang sie zur Rückkehr nach Wien. Vermutlich ging sie bereits 1927 und nicht erst 1938 nach England, 1965 emigrierte sie in die USA. Ihr künstlerisches Schaffen wurde von sozialkritischen Themen bestimmt. Bertha Tarnays Leben war von besonderem Unglück geprägt. Ihr erster Mann, den sie 1914 geheiratet hatte, erschoß ihren Liebhaber, von dem sie schwanger war; auch die zweite Ehe endete in einer Scheidung, die dritte war eine Zweckehe. Dann verstarb sie nach langer Krankheit. Das National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C. besitzt einige Werke der Künstlerin.
