Allen Regierungssystemen Frankreichs vom Direktorium bis zum Juli-Königtum hatte er gedient, und sein Name ist für die Nachwelt zum Inbegriff der klassischen Diplomatie geworden. Forschung und populäre Literatur haben nicht nachgelassen, die Rätsel seiner scheinbar so wandlungsfähigen Persönlichkeit zu enthüllen, und es ist nicht lange her, daß ein mit leichter Hand hingeworfenes Lebensbild aus dir Feder eines englischen Konservativen .auch in Deutschland einen fast verblüffenden Widerhall fand. Die seltene Fähigkeit, die wesentlichen Konturen des Geschehens in ganz knappen Strichen herauszuarbei- ten, und die sicher gehandhabte literarische Form, die zwar Einzelzüge anschaulich festhält, aber den Leser nie im Detail versinken läßt, erweisen Tarle als einen Geschichtschreiber von Rang, der den Leser zu fesseln versteht. Das her- gebrachte Talleyrand-Bild erfährt sehr bedeutungsvolle Korrekturen, und die Historie wird an den Beweisführungen des gelehrten Verfassers, der zudem aus russischen Archiven manchen neuen Quellenbeleg aufschlußreich verarbeitet, nicht vorübergehen können. In Tarles Biographie sind die Dinge in engem Zusammenhang mit der ökonomischen Geschichte gesehen. auch hei der Deutung der Persönlichkeit, und so ergeben sich wichtige neue Züge für ein realistisches Lebensbild, das freilich nicht mehr den Zauber beispielhafter Leistung oder unwägbarer Genialität ausstrahlt. Die Zeitgenossen hatten kein günstiges Bild des Mannes vor Augen, Mißtrauen und Verachtung herrschten vor. In allem, was Tarle hierzu aus den literarischen Quellen der Zeit beizusteuern weiß, offenbart sich eine umfassende Belesenheit.
