Because of this rich array of habitats, a rich diversity of birds of prey is to be found in the Transvaal; no less than 62 different species have been recorded here. A growing awareness that many of these have become scarce in recent times, not only in the Transvaal but throughout southern Africa, prompted the Transvaal Division of Nature Conservation to undertake a survey, the primary aim of which was to assess each species' present and past status.".
