This pioneering study of the indigenous philosophical tradition of Orissa which evolved between the 15 16 century CE brings into limelight the wonderful syncretism of Buddhism and Vaisnavism traditions that are generally considered philosophically antithetical. A deep metaphysical quest underlies the enquiries and analyses of this assimilative tradition and is epitomized in the works of the philosopher poets of Orissa in the concept of the Sunya Purusa the ineffable indescribable and non dual reality. This is a unique concept that encompasses within its fold the idea of Jagannatha (the Vaisnavite deity of Puri) as Sunya. The author explores the whole range of Indian philosophical heritage including Vaisnavism Buddhism Advaita Vedanta Yoga and Natha tradition to bring out the highpoints of this rare philosophical tradition. She very competently throws light on the philosophical theories/concepts of Bauddha Vaisnavism Vaisnavic in form but Buddhist in spirit. The book is a valuable guide on this distinctive Orissan Vaisnava tradition to all students and scholars of Indian religion and philosophy. 268 pp.…

Word meaning and sentence meaning. 9. The knowable and the Sayable. Appendix. Glossary of Sanskrit terms. Select bibliography. Index. It is the first ever study of the fifth century scholar Bhartrhari's Vakyapadiya in an altogether modern the post Fregean perspective on the philosophy of language. A uniquely original thinker in India's splendid grammarians tradition Bhartrhari overreached the limits of language analysis set by his predecessors like Panini and Patanjali constructing as he did a brilliant philosophy of language that sought to spell out among other aspects the subtle distinctions between the knowable and the sayable between what is said and what is meant between the semantics of everyday speech and literary discourse. Sadly Bhartrhari has through the centuries suffered neglect largely because the Grammarian school never figured in the six major systems of traditional Indian philosophy. For the first time this monograph tries to reinterpret Bhartrhari's position as a philosopher emphasizing the high relevance of his Vakyapadiya to modern Western thought. A reputed scholar of grammar philosophy and Sanskrit studies the author present Bhartrhari's analyses of language methodically unbiasedly. And significantly in contemporary philosophical idiom with contextual focus on the views of modern Western philosophers Frege Wittgenstein Grice Austin Davidson Searle Strawson and the like. Also offered here is a lucid exposition of the Sphota theory. Growing from Dr. Patnaik's a decade long research on Bhartrhari's philosophy the volume highlights not only ancient Indian contribution to the study of language but the interconnectedness among its indigenous approaches to linguistics philosophy logic and aesthetics as well. 228 pp.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. The metaphysics of the word: Bhartrhari on Sabdavaitavada. 3. Time as power: Bhartrhari. 4. Time as a substance: nyaya-Vaisesika. 5. Time as a mental construct: Buddhism and Yoga. 6. The concept of Khandakala: the divisible time. 7. Time and creation. 8. Kalasakti Maya Avidya and Sabda-Brahman. 9. Conclusion. Bibliography. Index. The volume delves into Bhartrihari s conception of Time as power (Kalashakti) as enunciated in the ninth section of the third Canto of his Vakyapadiya, entitled Kala Samuddesha. Prof. Patnaik tries to argue that Time as the power (Kalashakti) serves as an important conceptual tool for Bhartrihari to maintain his non-dualistic position, both in the level of ontology as well as semantics. The book examines the Bhartriharian model of Kala as Shakti in the backdrop of two other models available in the Indian philosophical tradition Time as substance (Vaisheshika and Nyaya Darshana), on the one hand, and Time as atom (kshana/svalakshanas) of the Yoga and Sautrantika Buddhism. Whether Kala is admitted as an abstract and trans-empirical principle (Kala) or just as a measurable unit of events, no philosophical tradition has been able to discard its semantic role. This is evident from our usage of tense-words. But this double-valued nature of time as a metaphysical principle and as a semantic apparatus comes out most explicitly in Bhartrihari s analysis of time as a power. In his unflinching non-dualistic (advaitin) stand both in the level of metaphysics as well as semantics Kala serves as an important conceptual link between unity and diversity; unchanged and the changing. Kala also has the point of convergence between the two streams of philosophy metaphysics and semantics. The book is rare in nature, both in content and accessability, as there is very little literature available on the topics discussed in the book. The paucity of materials in the area of thought makes it a scholar s collection. (jacket).…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. Part I: 2. God as Shunya: Other Traditions. Part II: 3. The Genesis of Mahima Dharma. 4. God as Shunya: Mahima Dharma. 5. Shunya-Brahman, Jagat and Jiva. 6. Man and God. 7. The Dissident Stream of Sprituality. 8. God as Shunya and Universalism. Appendix. Bibliography. Index. The philosophy of Mahima Dharma, a religious tradition of Odisha, is centred around the concept of God as Shunya-Brahman, and is remarkable for its stance towards religion, man and society. Mahima Dharma, though very much a part of the Indian religio-philosophical tradition, boldly defies idolatry, meaningless rites, religious pomposites and social discrimination, based on varna dharmajati. Bhima Bhoi, the chief protagonist of this dharma, presents a shunya-centric metaphysics and takes it to a meaningful logical conclusion. Bhima Bhoi, a well-known tribal poet of nineteenth-century Odisha, presents through his lyrical compositions rarefied concepts like Shunya-Brahman, identity between jiva and Brahman, the relation between brahmanda and pinda and bhakti as atmajnana. His words, choice of philosophical ideas and style of presentation bear the stamp of his predecessors, Pancasakha and Caitanya Dasa. This volume concisely deals with the varied aspects of Indian religio-philosophic tradition such as God as shunya in other traditions, the genesis of Mahima Dharma and its approach and interpretation of Shunya-Brahman, the relationship between God and man, and the dissident stream of spirituality. It talks about the persona of Bhima Bhoi as a poet and a philosopher, and his contested status in the society; also the impact of other thought systems like Buddhism, classical Advaitism, Sanatana Dharma on Mahima Dharma. Academic in nature, this book should propel the inquisitiveness of many a researcher on Indian religio-philosophic systems and students of philosophy and theological systems.…
