Unbekannt. Zustand: Gut. 1st Edition. 441 S. This volume contains the 31 papers presented at the first international workshop on Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT '90) which was held in Tokyo, 8-10 October 1990. This workshop was the first meeting on this subject sponsored by the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, and it is expected that future ALT workshops will be held every two years. Recent research on AI systems has indicated that 'learning ability' is fundamental to the development of intelligent computer software and of information systems in areas such as natural language understanding, pattern recognition, and robotics. The main aim of this workshop was to provide an open forum for intensive discussions and the exchange of academic information among researchers in the area of algorithmic learning theory. From the 46 extended abstracts submitted, 28 papers were selected for inclusion in this volume, with authors from the USA, the UK, Japan, the USSR, India, and continental Europe. Besides the 28 selected papers, the program committee invited 3 lectures by distinguished researchers: "Mathematical Theory of Neural Learning" (by S. Amari, University of Tokyo), "Decision Theoretic Generalizations of the PAC Learning Model" (by D. Haussler, University of California), and "Inductive Logic Programming" (by S. Muggleton, The Turing Institute, Glasgow). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 710.

In response to the call for papers, 51 papers on all aspects of algorithmic learning theory and related areas were submitted, of which 26 papers were - lected for presentation by the program committee based on their originality, quality, and relevance to the theory of machine learning. In addition to these regular papers, this volume contains three papers of invited lectures presented byKatharinaMorikoftheUniversityofDortmund,RobertE.SchapireofAT&T Labs, Shannon Lab., and Kenji Yamanishi of NEC, C&C Media Research Lab. ALT 99 is not just one of the ALT conference series, but this conference marks the tenth anniversary in the series that was launched in Tokyo, in Oc- ber 1990, for the discussion of research topics on all areas related to algorithmic learning theory. The ALT series was renamedlast year fromALT workshop'to ALT conference',expressing its wider goalof providing an ideal forum to bring together researchers from both theoretical and practical learning communities, producing novel concepts and criteria that would bene t both. This movement wasre ectedinthepaperspresentedatALT 99,wheretherewereseveralpapers motivated by application oriented problems such as noise, data precision, etc. Furthermore, ALT 99 benet ed from being held jointly with the 2nd Inter- tional Conference on Discovery Science (DS 99), the conference for discussing, among other things, more applied aspects of machine learning. Also, we could celebrate the tenth anniversary of the ALT series with researchers from both theoretical and practical communities.

In addition to 3 invited papers, 29papers were selected from 47 submitted extended abstracts. The workshop was the fourth in a series of ALT workshops, whose focus is on theories of machine learning and theapplication of such theories to real-world learningproblems. The ALT workshops have been held annually since1990, sponsored by the Japanese Society for ArtificialIntelligence. The volume is organized into parts oninductive logic and inference, inductive inference, approximate learning, query learning, explanation-basedlearning, and new learning paradigms.
