Thema des Buches: das Verständnis der ph…ysikalischen Prozesse an Kontaktflächen. Es beschreibt Reibung als Ergebnis von zwei Hauptfaktoren: Adhäsion: die molekulare Anziehung an den tatsächlichen Berührungspunkten (Rauheitsspitzen); Deformation: Der Widerstand, der entsteht, wenn harte Spitzen durch eine weichere Oberfläche pflügen. Dabei zeigen die Autoren, dass die tatsächliche Berührungsfläche nur einen Bruchteil der Haftungsfläche ausmacht und proportional zur Normalkraft ist. In diesem Zusammenhang untersuchen Bowden und Tabor detailliert die Grenzschmierung und die Wirkung von dünnen Filmen auf metallischen Oberflächen. Das Ergebnis: das Bowden-Tabor-Modell. Das Modell widerlegte die Vorstellung, dass Reibung rein oberflächlich ist, und zeigte auf, dass sie von Materialeigenschaften wie Härte und Schmelzpunkt abhängt.
