[Full collation available; lacking 18 of 576 leaves.] Bound in contemporary vellum. On the spine, three raised bands. Remnants of the title (?) in ink manuscript at the head. Front board detached, and worn generally. Damp-stained throughout. Lacking 18 leaves: 3 initials (4pp. epistle, 2pp. to the reader), 14 leaves of text (i.e., of plates) and 1 leaf of the index (only the gutter is present; with a further loss of some 3/5 of of CccC6 (pp. 3-4 of the index)). Title-page mounted, with a loss to the fore-edge (not affecting the text) and an obliterated ink inscription along the lower edge. Initial 6 leaves shaved at the head. Tear to the final leaf (DddD4), with the loss of a few letters. Worming at the very bottom of V6-Gg1 (not affecting the text), to the upper edge of DdD4-EeE4 and of IiI5-KkK7. Ink-burns to Oo5, EeE5, GgG8, NnN3 and CccC1. Pen-trials to the lower margins of pp. 627, 641 and the rear paste-down. Ex-libris of John Peters to the front paste-down Jakob Dietrich (Jacobus Theodorus, called Tabernaemontanus after the Latin name of his birthplace, Bad Bergzabern; ca. 1522-1590) is one of the German "fathers of botany," only a little less famous than Leonhart Fuchs and Otto Brunfels. He traversed Europe, studying in Strasbourg, Padua, Montpellier and finally Heidelberg, where he received his medical doctorate. All the while he was botanizing, collecting and categorizing specimens of plants. In 1588 he brought out the first part of his Neuw Kreuterbuch (New Herbal), a project that would continue until 1591. Meanwhile, he published the present work: the images (Eicones being Greek Eikones, images) of the plants, i.e., without the accompanying text. For such a vast work, it is eminently usable -- perhaps the explanation for its present state. That said, it is rare on the market, and many examples are incomplete. An early owner -- writing with a pencil, perhaps XVIIIc? -- was Italian. On p. 953 against the Laurus angustifolia mas is written "Persiginni dare al collo di odorate" and against the Malus Arantia (p. 955) "pomo per il ." (both difficult to interpret). On p. 956, Malus Assyria and Malus Lemonia are glossed "portugalli" and "limoni." Of the ink annotator little can be said; the ink seems to have spread considerably, and many of the marks are simply crosses or other signs. The later history of the volume is fairly well documented, although the ex-libris of John Peters (XXc by style) is difficult to place; other books with his label have come to auction, though mostly Classical authors. The present volume came up at Sotheby's London 19 July 1984, lot 163 (£264, sold to (Solomon?) Shapiro), and already it was limping. The first two leaves of the text (A1-2) are not listed as absent, and the front board is not listed as detached. Shapiro presumably sold it to Richard Harris (acquired at his sale, Bloomsbury New York 16 October 2010, lot 107), whose collection of natural history material was among the finest ever to have come to market. Contemporary calf, spine in compartments with raised bands, richly decorated in gilt. Lower joint torn at head, upper joint with 6 cm tear at tail, covers quite heavily scuffed, extremities rubbed and bumped, corners very worn. Engraved title leaf quite heavily browned and frayed, with loss at tail, and further loss at head with slight loss of image, and with hole in left margin with very minor loss of image, preliminary leaves and outer margins of index also quite loose, chipped and browned. Somewhat browned and stained throughout, with sporadic marginal dampstaining, and a few small marginal nicks and tears. With the crowned ownership monogram "C. T." for Claes Tott stamped in gilt on both covers, the signature of Sten Bielke in the centre of the engraved title page, old shelfmark in ink and later notes in pencil on front pastedown. An augmented and revised edition of Tabernaemontanus' famous herbal first published in 1588. This edition is the work of Hieronymus Bauhin, grandson of Caspar Bauhin, the editor of the revised and enlarged edition of 1613. It is one of the most extensive herbals and was much used by botanists even up to the early 18th century. Linnaeus owned a copy of this edition. Like the majority of the herbalists, Jacob Theodor von Bergzabern (latinised Tabernaemontanus, ca. 1520-1590) was a medical man. He was closely connected with such people as Otto Brunfels and Hieronymus Bock. His herbal first appeared in 1588 and is a large and finely illustrated work. The figures are for the most part not original, but reproduced from Bock, Fuchs, Dodoen, Mattioli, de l'Ecluse, and de l'Obel. This collection of woodblocks became familiar in England a few years later, when they were acquired by the printer John Norton and used to illustrate Gerard's "Herball" (1597). Tabernaemontanus was the last of the botanists of the 16th century who attempted to produce an extensive book on herbs for the purpose of identification of the plants and their medical properties. His work is of major importance because of its systematic approach. The early attempts at classifying the individual plants in families makes Tabernaemontanus a precursor to Linnaeus and one of the fathers of the new botany. Privy council and field marshal Claes Tott (1630-1674) was at a young age a protégée of Queen Christina. A number of times, he was sent to Paris as a Swedish ambassador and during his travels he acquired books for his library. Tott took a keen interest in natural science and was a patron for Urban Hiärne who also served as his personal physician. Hiärne's extensive study tour of France and England, where he was elected a fellow of Royal Society, was paid for by Tott. Since Tott didn't have any children of his own, his library was inherited by his uncle Sten Bielke (1624-1684). In the process of the Swedish reduction, the library was confiscated by the state, and many books from the Tott-Bielke collection are now to be found in the Royal Library in Stockholm.

Halle in München, Katalog XLIII, S. 112, Pos. 765, der eine gekürzte spätere Titelvariante von 1573 bereits als selten bezeichnet ! - Nach schriftlicher Auskunft der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek gibt es mindestens noch zwei spätere Ausgaben von 1573 bzw. 1582. - Tabernaemontanus (geb. zwischen 1520 und 1530 in Bergzabern, gest. 1590 in Heidelberg), berühmter Arzt, Apotheker und Botaniker; Schüler von Brunfels und Bock. Er war Leibarzt unter dem Grafen von Nassau, dem Bischof Marquard und zuletzt bei Kurfürst Johann Casimir in Heidelberg. Berühmt wurde er als Verfasser des Werkes " Neuw vollkommentlich Kreuterbuch." (1588-1591). Zeit seines Lebens beschäftigte sich Tabernaemontanus mit der Erforschung eines Universalheilmittels gegen die Pest (vgl. hierzu auch den Ausstellungstext der Tabernaemontanus-Ausstellung im Herbst 1998 in Saarbrücken). - Vorliegendes Werk beinhaltet Hunderte von Rezepturen zur Behandlung und Vorbeugung gegen die Pest. Die Schrift erklärt ferner Maßregeln beim Essen und Trinken, Reinhaltung der Luft, Ratschläge für Schwangere, Pestbeulen, Erkennen von Pestsymptomen, die Herstellung von Rauchküchlein (als Gegenmittel für die Pest) usw. - Gutes Ex. dieses seltenen Werkes, die ersten Blätter am Seitenrand (ohne Textverlust) angegossen und fachmännisch durch den Buchbinder mit neuem Papier ergänzt, S. 13 und S. 132 mit kl.
