Paperback. Zustand: As New. New. Contents 1. Introduction. 2. History of excavation and terminology. 3. Age of the civilization. 4. Systematic account of animal remains. 5. Animal forms recovered from Lothal and their present state of distribution (table). 6. Discussion. 7. Summary. 8. Acknowledgements. 9. References. 10. Index. From the introduction The Indus Valley has been known to be the centre of one of the earliest civilization of the world ever since the discovery of Harappa and Mohenjodaro in 1921 22. Hardly any site of the Indus (Harappa) civilization was discovered within the present day Indian territory at the time of independence and partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The Archaeological Survey of India took up the task of exploring regions east of Indus Valley for finding out Harappan sites. The renewed excavation resulted in the discovery of at least forty Harappan sites in Saurashtra (in Gujarat) the most important among them being Lothal. The word Lothal in Gujarati formed by combining two words Loth and Thal (Sthal) means mound of dead. Interestingly the word Mohenjodaro; in Sindhi carries the same meaning. Lothal lies between two ranns or salt waters namely Rann of Cambay on the south and the little Rann of Kutch on the north with the Nal Lake in the centre. The ancient mound in a flat featureless alluvial lowland was situated on the northern margin of the boundary line separating Saragwala village from Laxmipura and was coming under the revenue jurisdiction of Saragwala administered by the Collectorate of Ahmedabad. 162 pp.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. "The Anthropological Survey of India (ASI) launched the People of India project on 2 October 1985 to generate an anthropological profile of all the communities of India, the impact of change and the development process on them, and the factors that bring them together. "As part of this all- India project, the first ever ethnographic survey of Delhi was undertaken by the ASI in collaboration with local scholars. For the first time one hundred and forty seven communities of Delhi were studied and their origin, distribution, social organisation, occupation, attitude towards change and development were profiled. Other dimensions of the study included language and human biology. This ethnographic material was also discussed at a workshop held on 16-17 November 1989 in Delhi. "Though the evolution of Delhi from a magnificent medieval city to the imperial capital and then into a burgeoning national capital has been documented many times, the account of the communities which have made Delhi their home is being presented in this work for the first time.
Hardbound. Zustand: As New. Contents: Introduction. 1. Deccan pastoral: the making of an ethnohistorical imagination in Western India. 2. Bombay and the politics of urban desire. 3. "Say with pride that we are Hindus": Shiv Sena and communal populism. 4. Thane city: the making of political Dadaism. 5. Riots, policing, and truth telling in Bombay. 6. In the Muslim Mohalla. 7. Living the dream: Governance, graft, and goons. Conclusions. Politics as permanent performance. Notes. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. When ' Bombay' became 'Mumbai', it was the culmination of a process that transformed India's first symbol of modernity and cultural diversity into an urban landscape of violent nationalism and ethnic conflict. Challenging conventional writings on Indian politics, Thomas Blom Hansen shows that the xenophobic public culture of the Indian city, specifically contemporary Mumbai, has deep roots in regional histories and contested identities. He shows how the atmosphere of urban India, its dominant public languages, and its political power structures have changed over the past thirty years. "Studying how the Shiv Sena and similar militant outfits have advanced their new, plebeian culture and altered the nature of urban politics in India, Blom Hansen provides a vivid picture of urban violence even as he argues that such changes represent the ' vernacularization of Democracy' in the country as a whole. "This book also contains revealing insights into Mumbai's Muslim communities and the authorities' understanding and control of religious violence. 269 pp.

Several reports have shown that adequate intake of fruits form an important part of a healthy diet and low fruit intake constitute a risk factor for chronic diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke and cataract formation. Fruits crops are thus considered essential for well-balanced diets since they supply vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and phyto-chemicals. Special emphasis has been placed long back through the education on fruit science with the publication of the text-cum reference book in a single volume "Fruit Crops: Tropical and sub-tropical" as early as 1985. This book was greatly appreciated and proved valuable to the students, teachers, researchers and extension specialists in horticulture in general and fruit science in particular, in different parts of the world. Keeping the demand and interest of the stakeholders in view, this book was revised further in 1993 and 2002 through regular incorporation of updated research works in one and two volumes, respectively. Wide array of modern research approaches on fruit crops in India and abroad during last two decades warrant fourth revision of the book in four volumes. In this edition, every aspect of production, protection, breeding and biotechnology of 48 fruit crops grown in tropical and subtropical regions, were dealt with by eminent academicians and scientists on fruit crops in the country and abroad. This book, structured with thousands of references and colour photographs stands as unique of its own. Students, researchers, horticulturists, agricultural research scientists and extension personnel across the world will find this book very informative as well as practical.
