Washi hand-made paper covers color stencil decorated , 10.5 x 15.5 cm., accordion folded, opens to 1m. ca 38 cm., with progressive color printing of each woodblock of all 10 stages. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE EXAMPLE . *** **** *** . . . AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE FIRST EDITION EXAMPLE . . . A DOI HANGATEN PUBLISHER 1936 . . . USING "ARASHIMA" BY TSUCHIYA KOITSU AS AN EXAMPLE . . . . ILLUSTRATING THE 10 COLOR SEPARATE WOODBLOCK PRINTINGS . . *** Tsuchiya Koitsu [1870-1949, was a leading Shin Hanga artist. painter & woodblock print designer. He was the best pupil of Kobayashi Kiyochika [1846-1915] per the introduction, Doi stated that Koitsu ".called the Hiroshige in the Meiji Era." . This means that Doi believed that Koitsu was considered the equal of Hiroshige of Meiji period [1967-1912].during his tenure. . See Walker below for more biographical information below. . *** This book was issued by Doi Hanga Ten of Tokyo. They were one of 2 or 3 of the most skillful and celebrated woodblock print carvers, publishers and distributors of color woodblock prints, books and color woodblock printed items such as calendars &c. of the period. . This example was created using a famous artist of the times to educate westerners about the many stages and progression of color woodblock printing. . It shows the step-b-step printing method, showing what each separate printing adds to the overall finished print. Each progressive and added step of printing is shown on the left hand page. The right hand page shows the results of adding that block portion of the print. The last page shows the completed color woodblock print. The work begins with the 'key' block or black outline block showing the whole print. Progressively each part is added one step at time. . The final print shows the artist signature in block as a red oblong Hanko [seal/chop] with "Koitsu." Above this is the print title in black Kanji reading: ARASHIYAMA, a place in Kyoto. In the lower left corner is Doi Hanga Ten [publisher's] seal. . This exact print is found in Walker below, see for details. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: This book is bound in the original publisher's color stencil decorated board covers. There is a bit of rubbing to the two front cover labels, identifying the title and publisher. The back cover is excellent, otherwise the covers as usual are a bit rubbed at the edges. The contents is very clean, no issues The book illustrations are color woodblock prints, on accordion folded leaves. Some leaves have had the hinges restored, using Washi [handmade] Japanese paper, slightly out of alignment, performed in the distant past Otherwise the book is firm and solid. . *** REFERENCE: .
